Doorinholdt

Cities in Aedir are always a Work in Progress, so things can change on a whim. If you have any specific questions, Empo is probably a more reliable source than the World Anvil.
Doorinholdt is a relatively large city within the Kingdom of Dumont. It is one of the Sister Cities, known as the "Sister City of the Spear." Doorinhodlt is renown for it's large military and is considered the militaristic head of the Kingdom of Dumont. The Vanguard are said to be some of the strictest and most trained regiment within the Veilnum itself.   Ran by High Commandant Boris Door, the city is said to be a safe haven for those who seek refuge from the Demon attacks that the Northern Plains of Dumont face. And although the people of Doorinholdt are ruled under an intense and heavy handed iron fist, the city is relatively safe.

Demographics

The Demographic make up of Doorinholdt is the following:
  • Humans, Orcs and Changelings make up a majority of the population.
Special Enclaves:
  • The Changelings under the Lilac Clan, make up an autonomous region within the Middle Rung of the city. All of the Changelings within Dumont are given autonomy within their own clan's borders. However, Boris Door over time began condensing the boundaries of which the Lilac's political influence was exerted. Their political holding now consists of the size of a football field (for comparison).
  • Orcs are given a high status within the city, due to the fact that they have a kinship with Boris Door and he favors his kin. Most Orcs and Half-Orcs become aristocrats within the High Rung.

Government

The High Commandant and the High Council

Boris Door, who has been the High Commandant since the city's creation rules Doorinholdt with an Iron Fist. He is said to be a planner in the paranoid sense and the compulsive sense. He has a contingency plan for everything imaginable. While he rules Doorinholdt with an Iron Fist, he also has a High Council who acts as his "counter" to his power. Half of them are personally elected by him, while the other half are "elected" by the people of the city.
  1. The Door District (High Rung)
  2. The Marble District (High Rung)
  3. The Academia District (High Rung)
  4. The Lilac District (Middle Rung)
  5. The Harbor District (Middle Rung)
  6. The Destitute District (Middle Rung)
  7. The Callous District (Lower Rung)
  8. The Shield District (Lower Rung)
  9. The Quartering District (Lower Rung)
The council members are all anonymous. Once a person from the Lower Rung becomes a politician, it is likely that the people of the Lower Rung will never see them again.

The Ward Captains

There are 4 Ward Captains of Doorinholdt, the four of them running the militaristic operations within the city. The following are the four individuals and their titles.
  1. Severa (Ward Captain of Tactics): Severa is a Ward Captain of Tactics. She is known for being one of the only Ward Captains to tame a Black Wyrmling. Wyrmlings are the closest thing to living Dragons. She is known for always being a handful of steps ahead of her adversaries and has an undying love for Boris Door and had kids with him on many occasions.
  2. Housk (Ward Captain of Defense): Housk was the first Ward Captain to be knighted by Boris Door and is considered one of his closest confidants. He is Boris' Guard and Servant. He has devoted his life to the defense of Doorinholdt. He is known for consuming the souls and weapons of those he defeats and defectors of the Vanguard.
  3. O'Malley (Ward Captain of Steel): O'Malley is a Ward Captain of Steel. O'Malley was knighted with the goal to exert Doorinholdt's military prowess to continue to fight the Demonic threat outside of its border. He is regarded as one of the strongest fighters in not just Dumont, but most of the Veilnum, and not someone to be taken lightly.
  4. Ravena (Ward Captain of Civics): Ravena is a Ward Captain of Civics. She is charged with watching over the citizens of Doorinholdt and ensuring no thoughts of rebellion are brewing within the city. She keeps an Eye of Scrying in almost every house within the city to keep Boris' Iron Fist on the City. She was also made aware of the Smugglers running rampant within the city and is the process of dealing with them.

Defences

Doorinholdt is relatively well stocked and well equipped. The city imports it metals and materials from the mines of Dwain, and from there, they manufacture a majority of the weapons from those materials. The military and navy of Doorinholdt is immense. Their power extends and encompasses most of the Western side of the Veilnum Archipelago.   Doorinholdt has vast defenses that dot the city. From walls that rise hundreds of feet tall to massive Arcane Canons that line those walls. The Military of Doorinholdt is said to be the most discipline, efficient and headstrong military force on the continent. They have trained their bodies and mind through rigorous military drills at Drude Military Academy.

Industry & Trade

The main export of Doorinholdt is their armaments and weaponry. The people of Doorinholdt created so much weaponry in their Callous District that it nearly crashed the steel and iron economy in the Veilnum Archipelago. However, one of the fatal flaws of Doorinholdt is that they have no natural materialistic exports. They have to import their steel and most of their building materials.

Infrastructure

The wide array of space in Doorinholdt allows for each of their own Rungs to have their own established infrastructure. For example, the Quartering District produces military armaments. The Harbor District exports those armaments. The Academia District exports soldiers to the other parts of the Kingdom of Dumont.

Districts

The Door District (High Rung)

The Door District is the district of Doorinholdt where Boris Door and the aristocrats of Doorinholdt reside. All of the political happenings of the city happen here. It is made in start contrast to the other districts with it's elegant streets and large illustrious buildings, where most of it is rundown and abandoned. The Door District is located at the highest point of Doorinholdt and is the most defensive place in the city.   Notable Buildings within the Door District:
  • The Grand Palace of the Door Family

The Marble District (High Rung)

The Marble District is where the non-aristocratic elite and nobility reside within the city. Like the Door District, it is very lavish and ornate. Most of the people in the Marble District do not have to fear for their life like they do in the lower rungs of the city. People in the Marble District hire mercenaries to protect them in the event they have to go through the Middle Rungs, as well as to avoid any hassle with thiefs, beggars or assassins.   Notable Buildings within the Marble District:
  • Nyxia's Manor

The Academia District (High Rung)

The Academia District within Doorinholdt is where the Drude Academy is located. The Drude Academy is where the soldiers of Doorinholdt train to become Vanguards and protect the city of Doorinholdt and export them to the other cities of Dumont. There, people volunteer to join the military, or are assigned to the Academy through a lottery. They have to spend 8 years learning and studying military tactics, before taking a rigorous military task, involving the slaying of Demons, in which only those that survive can be honored enough to join the Vanguard. This ceremony is called "Hell Week".   Notable Buildings within the Academia District:
  • Drude Academy (Will be updated with time)
  • (DA) The Tarramany Hall: Where Martial tactics is studied.
  • (DA) The Schustack Hall: Where Magica and Arcana is studied.
  • (DA) The Pinkerton Hall: Where Technology is studied.

The Lilac District (Middle Rung)

Where the Lilac Clan of Changelings are located. It is about the side of a football field, meaning for the thousands of Changelings that live there, they are condensed in one of the worst living conditions possible. This was done to lessen their rights and to lessen their political influence within the city ward. Giving them a small corner in the Middle Rung.   Notable Buildings within the Lilac District:
  • The Lilac Halls: Where the Hagmother of the Lilac is located.

The Harbor District (Middle Rung)

The Harbor District of the city of Doorinholdt is where the dockyards and the harbor is located. The Dock is locked to the Middle Rung to try and cut off the Lower Ward from getting supplies and communication to the outside world. This is where most of the goods are exported and imported to and from the city and where most of the adventurers come into the city.   Notable Buildings within the Harbor District:
  • The Blighted Warehouse: A Lighthouse within the Harbor District that is said to have been taken over by fungus and algae from the Ocean.

The Destitute District (Middle Rung)

The Destitute District is the part of the district named as such because of an event known as Destitution. It was a day when Demons spilled out across the Middle Rung and attacked the district, which was mostly residential housing. In modern times, the Destitute District is known for being a wasteland where Demons and Devils roam across. It is mostly un-looted, where people must venture through ravaged buildings to gain loot in regards to gold and meager amounts of food. Sometimes, people must do this to survive, and is a big part of Hell Week. Bit by bit, the Vanguard clear out the Destitute District.   Notable Buildings within the Destitute District:
  • The Library of Order: A Library here that dates back to the time of Prehistory. This library is a small cylindrical room with the books 20ft in the air in small cubicles. Only the Cogwheel Archivist, a machine named "Cog" can get them.

The Callous District (Lower Rung)

The Callous District is the district where people work in the warehouses, sending goods across the city as well as assemble the armaments for the weaponry. Boris Door understands the risk of this and makes sure they are harshly watched. This District is one of the poorest, where the effects of the siphon can be found and witnessed first hand. Most of the nobles haven't even seen what the Lower Rung looks like.   Notable Buildings within the Destitute District:
  • Boneground Warehouse: A warehouse that is the house of R'd and where the Bonecage, which is now renamed into The Spiral is held. Underground fighter is extremely common for fighters in Doorinholdt to maker a name for themselves. It is also common for these fights to end in dead, as there is not a very capable medical apparatus within the city. It is also common for nobles to bet on fighters and if they take a likening to them, can even hire them as guards, ascending them to higher Rungs.
  • The Shredded Bazaar: A small Bazaar of shredded tents where people try to sell their meager wares. Most people sell their lively possessions so they can afford food for the week. It is a tough lifestyle, but people try to make due with what they have.

The Shield District (Lower Rung)

The residential district of the Lower Rung, which hugs the wall. This was set for a more sinister purpose. The people are shields, unaware of this status. Due to their proximity to the wall, they are used as the first buffer or sacrificial lambs for the Middle and High Rung in the event of an attack. This commonly happens as it is possible for Demons to scale and topple over the Lower Wall. Although this is rare, it can still happen. The poorly equipped Vanguard in this section are sympathetic to the plight of these people but lack the capabilities to fight large scale demonic assaults.   Notable Buildings within the Destitute District:
  • The Happy Owlbear: A Bed and Breakfast owned by an elderly Halfling couple, the Owlbear Family. Known for their special, the "Split-Egg Special." Rations Salsespeople.
  • Overgrowth (S): A Druid Growth created by Fawrest Cyra, a Satyr that fell into the Material Plane from the Feywild. He has aspirations to see nature take over this place of desolation one day. He senses the city is Impure and in order to expand his Grove's influence, the city will need to become more pure. Nature Craftsman.

The Quarter District (Lower Rung)

The commercial district of the Lower Rung of Doorinholdt. Known as the Quarter District, because that is how much people make selling their goods in this setting, a quarter of a gold piece. There is a large coalition of unnamed smugglers, who attempt to smuggle higher and more luxury items into the Lower Rungs. This includes magical items.   Notable Buildings within the Destitute District:
  • Windee's Shop of Woodwinds (S): A shop owned by Windee, an Air Genasi who is a performer. He settled down in Doorinholdt after suffering an injury from a demon raid on his caravan. Now with his band's weapons, he hopes to sell them to leave the city. He incorporated himself into the smuggling guild and smuggles magical trinkets and knick knacks into the city. Magic Item Smuggler.
  • Just a Phrog (S): A shop owned by Phrog, a Grung from the Swamplands. It is said that Phrog swam over to Doorinholdt from the Swamplands. Being a Grung, his body can naturally produce dangerous toxins that he sells to assassins and people across the city. He is widely recognized as an ally to the plight of the people, although he doesn't known who "People" is. Toxins Seller.
  • The Masked One (S): A small mask tent owned by Eas, the Masked One. It is said that these masks have minor magical capabilities, but it is still speculated. Trinket Salesperson.
  • The Shining Eyes (S): A Shop owned by Ulrike Weinstock, where she sells fortune readings and mystical items. She is said to be a witch of some sorts and can put curses on those if they spend enough money for her to hex them. Mystics/Cursed Seller.
  • The Vanguard Outpost (S): The general store of Doorinholdt, which is ran by Kaspar Wahler, a young man who wants to live a simple life. He sells goods at cheap prices to pay for his family and their Academic funds. General Store.

Guilds and Factions

There are no main factions that work within the city of Doorinholdt. There are unnamed smuggling groups that attempt to smuggle common goods into the Lower Rung, but lately this has becoming harder and harder, as Boris has become aware of the scale of these efforts.

Architecture

The Architecture of Doorinholdt is similar to the makeup of Alverholdt. In the lower wards, houses are condensed and sprawl is immense, but the higher you go, the more manor-style houses you get. In the Lower Rungs, for example, there are many piles of debris just out on the street. Ruined buildings, destroyed infrastructure. Due to the fact that most people don't see what the Lower Rung looks like, they have no idea what's going on there and how dreadful things look.

Geography

Doorinholdt is 100% an artificial city, meaning that it was originally completely flat land with sporadic hills. Boris Door's first decree when he became High Commandant centuries ago, he mandated the construction of three tiers of the city, named Rungs. They were to be a sign of your class system and where you belong. The construction of the first tier alone took decades. The first Rung is so heavy that it caused the Earth underneath it to buckle and collapse, causing minor earthquakes within the Plains. The Earthquakes awakened something deep within the soil of Dumont, meant to be kept secret.   Doorinholdt is perpetually in a state where the city is sinking underneath the soil around it. Over the centuries of it's construction, the city has sunk nearly 10ft into the ground. Scientists estimate that it will sink another 10ft into the ground before stopping entirely on a day known as "The Final Day." This will radically change the way in which Doorinholdt will have to be changed, making the Middle Rung level to the floor and putting the Lower Rung underground.   Boris has a contingency plan for this... because he has a contingency for everything that happens within his city.

Natural Resources

One of the main flaws of Doorinholdt is that they have no naturally producing natural resources other than wood and stone for building shoddy buildings. They have to import and export their goods to make their raw materials as well as their more luxury goods that they need to make the people in the High Rung happy and content.
