King Corthen the Peaceful

King, the Peaceful Corthen

King Corthen the Peaceful was born nearly three hundred years ago to King Corthen the Brave and Queen Isadora the Cunning. While he is best remembered for the Corthen Decree which greatly expanded the education system of the Central Kingdom, this was far from his only accomplishment. He also negotiated the Scyllan Peace, opened trade routes with the Winterlands, and established legal guilds throughout the kingdom. His reign lasted for eighty years, ended by his death. He was succeeded by his wife, Queen Greta the Seer.

Personal history

King Corthen the Peaceful was born to King Corthen the Brave and Queen Isadora the Cunning nearly two and a half centuries ago. He displayed vast curiosity at an early age, sometimes sneaking out of combat training to spend time in the royal library. The oldest of three siblings, he ascended to the throne at the age of twenty upon the death of his father.   His love of education, combined with the growing threat of the Scyllan Coast's elemental military innovations, led to the Corthen decree. The decree greatly expanded the education system of the Central Kingdom while allowing unprecedented opportunities for the lower classes to have an education. The latter effect was entirely intentional; King Corthen was always concerned with the lower classes. He was once discovered disguised as a construction worker, helping to rebuild peasant's homes after a large fire. This was largely due to the influence of the Way of Roses; some even whispered he had secretly joined the Way. Historians have never found evidence of such an act.   Soon after he established peace with the Scyllan Coast, marrying one of their princesses to seal the treaty. His wife Queen Greta the Seer became a valuable political ally. Together they instituted the legal guilds and established trade routes to the Winterlands. Concealing her repeated affairs, however, became a headache, as did verifying the legitimacy of her children. Luckily for his dynasty, all but the youngest of her four children were legitimate.   At the height of their success, the royal couple was struck by tragedy. Their eldest child, Clematis, died in a hunting accident. King Corthen the Peaceful went into extended mourning, and limited his public appearances from then on. He eventually died of cancer at the age of eighty and was succeeded by his wife. Upon her death, their second-oldest child ascended to the throne to become Queen Lilian the Charming.
