Charybdan Coast

The Charybdan Coast stretches along the western edge of Terra, its northern end stopping where the Winterlands begin. Most of the coast is temperate to tropical, with varying amounts of rain. It also features several active volcanoes to the north. Its most notable feature, however, are the massive whirlpools that form offshore. These whirpools, the Charybs, vary in size and distance from the shore. Due to their unpredictability, however, navigation is difficult, with even the most daring captain refusing to venture any further than a mile or two.   The Charybdan Coast consists mostly of independent city-states. A few of these city-states are inland enough to be on land technically owned by the Central Kingdom; however, the Kingdom tends not to enforce its claims since the land is irrelevant for both farming and strategy. There is an experimental republic consisting of an alliance of cities in the northwest corner of the Charybdan Coast called The People's Coast; however, it is generally not even featured on maps.

Geography

The geography of the region varies greatly from north to south. The northern coast features many mountains, some of them active volcanoes. It is temperate, covered in either forests or grasslands. Mountains become less frequent further inland, eventually giving way to the Western Plains. There is one more mountain chain before the Central Plains.   Mountains are also smaller and less common toward the south, keeping pace with an increase in temperature and aridity. While areas next to the coast are fresh and green, inland areas are more likely to be grasslands, scrub, or even deserts. Drought is common, and some cities are only kept going through a large population of water and storm adepts. Furthermore, the southern regions are prone to earthquakes, leaving mountainous regions especially vulnerable to landslides.

Fauna & Flora

The northern Charybdan Coast is famous for its tall Redwoods, most of which are taller and older than any other tree in Terra.

Natural Resources

Most of the coast depends on fisheries; shallow areas close to the coast often harbor schools of fish attempting to avoid the latest vortex. The southern reaches are most dependent on fisheries, as the surrounding deserts provide few resources beyond sand. The mountainous northern coast has an active mining industry that produces everything from gold and gemstones to metals and gravel. Logging also occurs, but wood is not in high demand. The middle regions are somewhat agrarian, hosting both crops and livestock.
