Orc siege of 607
The orc siege of 607 saw thousands of Orcs, believed to be part of The Azdirite Empire, attacking The Kingdom of Sodoria via the fortress of Irongate.
The Conflict
Prelude
The Orc Horde, over 3,000 strong made camp in the vicinity of Irongate. The horde was unorganized and took several weeks to gather its forces. During this time, several ships with supplies and troops were sent to aid Irongate's defense.
Deployment
Deployment of the orc troops was sporadic and undisciplined , many orcs were in a battle rage and unable to stay within the protection of the shield wall formation. Some orcs were unable to swim and died drowning in the river.
Battlefield
A massive wall behind a river, backed by large fortress.
The Engagement
The orcs attacked in an in-orderly fashion, loosing undisciplined barrages against the entrenched defenders of the wall. Ladders were hastily placed along many areas of the wall, but with delayed artillery support, they were easily defeated.
The horde eventually began using catapults and giant stone throwers against the wall. This had some effect, but the barrage did not last long.
Shortly after the deployment of artillery, ships carrying Sodorian cavalry arrived behind the orc formations. Due to the lack of an orc naval force, the ships were uncontested. The cavalry took heavy losses but was able to defeat the majority of the artillery and sabotage supply lines and siege engines.
Without artillery support or siege equipment, the orcs had only ladders and climbing gear at their disposal. The attack was repelled after several days of fighting.
