Cato

Former Imperial Legate (military commander) of the Wolven in the war with Khemia and adviser to the late emperor, Cato is an older wolf in the story of Adastra who oversees to the trails of succession as the acting emperor between Amicus and Cassius. Cato is acting emperor as the Trials of Succession commence between the two heirs to the throne. Having lost his sight during the war with Khemia, he was gifted Parental technology by the previous Wolven emperor and so wears metallic goggles over his eyes. Incredibly strong despite his age, Cato mentors both Amicus and Cassius in Pugnu.

Character Synopsis

While seemingly in a good relationship with Amicus before the trials of succession, he slowly shows his favor for Cassius as emperor as the trials go on. After Amicus is late to a mentoring session, Cato violently beats Amicus in a mock pugnu fight demonstrably as a lesson. In both of the first two trials of succession, Cato votes in favor of Cassius despite reprimanding him for being out of order in the Trial of Rhetoric.   After finding out about Amicus and Marco's relationship, Cato beats Amicus again and has him stage the Trial of Combat for Cassius to win the emperorship. Marco, in a bid to save Amicus, Nervo's Cassius having Cato turn his attention to him. Amicus rips Cato's visor to allow Marco to escape to Neferu's room within the Palace. After losing his visor, Cato is mostly blind but continues to act much the same. In a meeting with Neferu about the fate of Marco, Cato strangles Neferu for his arrogance and beats him as he did with Amicus.   After the other characters convince Cassius to step down from being emperor, Cato betrays him with a poisoned wine and attempts to take the throne with a forced marriage to Virginia. Cato takes Neferu prisoner and sets up a public execution of the Khemian on Wolven television by slitting his throat with a golden knife. Marco and Amicus stop him just as he is about to kill Neferu and Amicus challenges him to a combat to the death. Cato begins winning the trial by combat but is stabbed by Marco in the back and neck. Cato wrests the knife from Marco and slits his throat before Amicus can recover. Amicus grabs Cato and finishes him off by ripping out his throat.
