Gorwin's Needle

"Ever since the day we found that obelisk, I've been seeing very peculiar visions." -Excerpt from the personal log of elven explorer Gorwin Liawenys

Purpose / Function

The purpose of the obelisk is as of yet unknown.

Architecture

Gorwin's Needle is a white marble obelisk. It stands at approximately fifty feet in height and tapers towards the top of the monument. The obelisk's smooth surface implies that it may have been carved from a single chunk of marble. The base of the monument is square; thirty feet long on each side. One of the sides has engravings written in an unknown language. Not even the alphabet used in the writings match up with any known writing system from Abrax. Scholars have hotly debated the meaning of the inscriptions, and there has been no consensus so far.

History

Gorwin's Needle is so named after the man who discovered it, a high elf explorer named Gorwin Liawenys. Discovered during an expedition to some ruins, Gorwin found the obelisk on a tiny island at the center of a lake. After documenting his discovery and returning home, Gorwin started having vivid hallucinations, seeing visions of another plane; one full of strange beasts and vast floating structures. At first, Gorwin wrote the hallucinations off as a sign that he needed to take a break. However, the visions continued. They grew longer and more detailed until they eventually shattered Gorwin's mind. Deemed a danger to himself and others, the once great adventurer spent the rest of his days in confinement, babbling and screeching incoherently.   To this day, people tend to avoid the area surrounding Gorwin's Needle. Some say the obelisk is cursed, while others say that it's a gateway to another plane of existence. Whatever it's actual purpose may be, few are daring enough to test their theories and investigate the obelisk...
