Vonrûn continent

The coldest of Abolar's continents

Geography

The Vonrûn continent is the coldest region in all Abolar. Its vast tundras and frozen land cover most of the continent in the north, while the south offers a more welcome chill with the sea crashing against the shores, splitting the rocks. Mountain ranges are common and dictate the type of natural life which can live here. By this reason, the continent is divided in several regions where this mountain ranges create physical frontiers between places. Transverse is not difficult but takes several days just to cross the ranges with high cliffs, rugged paths and falling debris. This feature led to fractured countries and kingdoms, each living in the spaces the mountains allowed. There's no or very few volcanic activity with most of the active volcanoes existing within the ranges. The ranges also bear an abundance of water which create numerous rivers and waterfalls that freeze during the coolest cycles of the world. Even with the difficult conditions, life thrives in the continent filling it with a diverse fauna and flora both common and magical. The landscape is pigmented by the colors various plants, lichens and stones give across the mountain sides and the constant cloudy sky conveys a timid beauty no other continent can give. To the south, where the warmest temperatures are found, ocean waves crash against high cliffs, braking the coast into falling pillars that sink into the sea with time. The few beaches which formed over the ages are hidden or protected by high walls composed of the surrounding terrain. Countless caves are dug by the ocean in the cliff faces, with intertwined tunnels forming a complex system where orientation is difficult and, sometimes dangerous.

Fauna & Flora

Since the continent is shrouded in mist and cold, only life forms that adapt to chilling environments can thrive here.  Life here consists of arctic creatures, capable of bearing the low temperatures the region produce. Also, creatures that use mountain cliffs as their home like various birds and goats, populate the land. Despite the abundance of water, flora is restricted by the harsh environment. Plants are cold resistant, like evergreens, and most brushes don't grow much more than a meter or two.

History

Much of Vonrûn is, still, untouched by the various kin that exist. The several countries that live in Vonrûn are old and their borders didn't changed much along the years. The hard ranges that divide the territories are an extra challenge when invading a foreign land. Only the most powerful kingdoms were capable of such tasks. Because of this, the history of the continent is brief but still rich. The first dwarven kingdoms were born here and the race never left in large numbers. The biggest migration of this kind was during The great departure and even then the population didn't decreased much. Other races use this continent has their home but not as many as dwarfs. The kingdoms didn't changed much along the eras. Even in the recent ages, where chaos and disorder damaged many of the nations and settlements existing at that time, the regions in Vonrûn were weakly affected. The resilient population, accustomed to lived with the conditions this regions are subjected on a daily basis, allowed its inhabitants to resist the nefarious consequences of the uncontrolled development of the Glazoon empire. This survival was made possible, not only by strength and endurance, but also by cunning people and clever solutions.  All this resistance to difficulties and hardships made the different countries in this continent attract the countless refugees that resulted of The great departure. Masses migrated to Vonrûn in search of a better life and their entry changed forever the nations settled. Arts, mores and traditions were mutated by the new cultures of the migrants and, while the rise in crime soon came back to normal, the new cultures ingrained in the peoples and maintain presence in the current year.
