"Why did you go to the Torii at Mt. Fuji?"
"The Torii?… I like to watch the birds. Their used to be birds everywhere, when I was younger. Now I see two, maybe three, a day, at most - but there are always some at the Torii, flying underneath, over and over - like they know something.
(a pause)
My mother, my grandmother, used to tell me that passing beneath a Torii was a purification, a blessing - if I had dark thoughts, if something was troubling me, all I had to do was run beneath the Torii, *nervous laughter* she would tell me to run you, run as fast as I could, if I run beneath the Torii fast enough they would leave me alone.
I think she just wanted me to get out of the house.
When I was young, I wondered, if I could fly though, as fast as a bird, what could I leave behind.
