Master Tinkers

    Gnome society at best stands in as a backdrop to history. There have never been great gnomish empires or even kingdoms. The only gnomish king is lost to legend only. But the gnomes have played an important part in the mechanics of history. If a nation has developed great engines of war, it is likely a gnome artisan was involved. If someone developed an airship, more than likely a gnome was involved. If you find indoor plumbing, gnomes are almost always to blame. Master tinkerers gnomish tinkering has been responsible for some of the greatest locks and traps of the world. When strife has consumed the world, like the Age of Enlightenment the gnomes dig deeper underground. Forest gnomes moving in with Rock gnomes, Rock gnomes moving in with Deep gnomes, Deep gnomes moving deeper in and getting very sick of their good for nothing Rock gnome brethren.  

A Natural Sense of Humor

  Gnomes are as old as the universe and maybe earlier, but they were just unthinking spirits of the earth. Their existence was a non-existence but it counts according to the gnomes. Gnomes became who they are when Garl Glittergold the Lord of the Golden hill whispered the first joke to Go the Gnome. Go walked the warrens of the world telling each gnome he could find the same joke and thus the true gnomes were born. That joke sustained Go for 1000 years as the first and only king of the gnomes. Since that each gnome carries a piece of the wit of that first joke, and it is through that joke that all gnomes find their power and intelligence.  

Anatomy

  Small and thin, Gnomes appear to be almost fairy in their appearance but not of the fey they are closer related to the land. Their hair color is mostly light but gnomes tend to stand out with their choices of wild hair and facial hair styles. They are Small of stature averaging between 3 and 4 feet tall and somewhere close to 40 pounds. Gnomes tend to have intricate clothing of varying styles.

Growth Rate and Stages

  Babies are all but helpless for the first 6 most of life. Gnomes are adult in stature at about 19 years old, but aren’t considered adult culturally till they are in their 30’s. Often there is a rite of passage to adulthood in their culture.  

Ecology and Habitats

  Quick to laugh and very energetic gnomes are always chipper. They live in secular societies in burrows either in the hills and forests, or smaller warrens in mountain rock or even some in the deep dark recesses in the underdark. They are very family first, clan second, gnome third.   

Dietary Needs and Habits

  Gnomes are able to eat and drink the same things humans can but instead do prefer a more salty and savory pallet. They also prefer a fruit base drink (cider, mead) to the more common wheat ale.  

Additional Information

  Suggested Characteristics: Generally gnomes out in the word adventuring understand that the ‘Tall ones’ will often disregard them. They have no problem using this to their advantage. They are joyous people and are very slow to really anger or get depressed. Quickest way to anger a gnome is to disrespect their kin.
