Valley of mist Geographic Location in The Garden that Burned | World Anvil

Valley of mist

Brief Overview

The valley is known to be blanketed in a mist that never disperses. Once a traveler enters it'll be months before they're seen again, and that's if they're seen again...

General Overview

Many efforts have been made to clear the mist but it always calmly rolls back into its place as if something is keeping it there leading many to assume it has magical origins.
Trade posts have been set up all along it's borders and man-made roads have been carved out around its perimeter in an attempt to deter travelers from entering the mist and to instead take the safety of the torch-lit roads lining the dense fog.

Geography

A vast expanse of lowlands veiled by a heavy mist. Several countries have tried to map the Valley but none have succeeded in anything other than loosing the lives of countless men and woman in this endeavor. Sinkholes and steep drops have been reported by the few that have made it out, however, when attempting to track back to them, some were no longer there.
The Valley is cased in on the west and north east coast by mountain ranges that are mainly untouched by man.
Long grass stretches out as far into the mist as any man has ever recorded going so it's assumed that it's host to many other differing types of flora yet to be discovered.

Ecosystem Cycles

Despite the shifting of seasons, the Valley of mist remains the same all year round with the exception of winter. During winter the mists density increases with no foreseen explanation.

Localized Phenomena

An eternal mist blankets the Valley from the ground to the bordering Mt. Ashe's peaks.

Fauna & Flora

The only known fauna living within the valley are few and far between given the difficulty of studying the ecosystem in its entirety. A few notable examples of documented fauna are as follows;

Quetzalcoatl - Serpents that fly on tiny wings made from focused precipitation. (clouds) They are known to be an aggressive species with hyper potent neurotoxins that are produced in small sacks behind their fangs, because of this they are hunted continuously to near extinction for extraction. The Quetz travel in large groups commonly referred to as swarms and they attack their prey in masses, killing prey the size of a matured Armadion in little under 2 minutes.
It is rumored that if a Quetz can survive for over ten thousand years that it will gain sentience and fly off into the stars, hence the constellation Kayodacyl which is fabled to be the first Quetz to attain its will.

Hymwyr - The Hymwyr's are a small warm blooded vertebrate known for their quick wings, long beaks that allow them to reach deep down into tubular flowers to get at nectar, a dangerous stinger located beneath its tail feathers that triggers temporary paralysis, and the fact that they're bones are incredibly porous in order to be as lightweight as possible. Some Hymwyr bones like those in the wings and the legs are even hollow to lessen their weight. The tiny feathers on its stomach and chest resemble super fine sensory hairs that allow them to develop a positive charge on their bodies as they fly through the air, this happens because as they fly the friction between their bodies and air molecules rub off electrons. because of this, the Hymwyr are known as Edens most effective pollinators, as the pollen sticks onto them as they seek out nectar and other food sources.
They can fly at speeds up to 55mph and fly forward, backward, hover, and even fly upside-down for brief amounts of time. Hymwyr's have been known to enter and exit the mist regularly. As a result, it is speculated that there are flora needing pollination existing in the Valley.

Praxis - The Praxis are considered to be the apex predator of the valley both because of their capable physical attributes and their ability to use the mist to their advantage. They are the largest mammal known to live in the valley and they are one of the few large cats that cannot roar, because where their mouth should be is instead four holes. The two holes further back between the jaws are larger and the holes just below their noses are smaller. These orifices are where the Praxis emits its mists and limited sounds from, possible vocalizations include hissing, moaning, and chuffing. Each is used in an attempt to mimic their prey, luring them deeper into the mists to disorient them. The Praxis itself has no need to use these noises among one another because they communicate solely with body language and pheromones in their mist.

Another odd note about the valley is that the trees in the area appear to be sweating, though none have been able to study them long enough to determine whether it is due to the precipitation or if the trees themselves are actually leaking.

History

On Jyor the 3rd, year 15 TN, a sound similar to glacial ice breaking in the valley shocked both the Aireai and the Valkorri who could clearly hear it from their neighboring kingdoms. All scouts sent from either country reported a vast mist consuming the valley as they attempted to re-enter the land, and the scouts that entered the mist itself never returned.
Another four years of attempts from the Valkorri, and six for the Aireai occured before they labelled the Valley as condemned or cursed lands and passed a law making it illegal to enter for any race or ethnicity unless ordered by someone of monarch status or with similar authoritative influence (like Edenpol authorities, for example).
Ever since, the Valley has been considered outlawed and left to its own devices. The only people known to willingly enter are scientists, as they are still struggling to uncover the cause of this phenomena.

Tourism

There is no tourism in the Valley, there is, however, a viewing point in Defil Vista where travellers are charged to be taken up to the peak for a birds eye view of the Valley of Mist.
