By the Luck of His Foot

Joe Cool was gently shaken from his peaceful slumber and refreshing dreams of the wild woods of home, to the sweet but slightly nauseating smell of smoke as blocks of insence burned. It wasn't a harsh smoke, but enough to tickle his sensitive leporidae nose, as it gave him a sense of nostalgia. Joe was surrounded by several strangers; a male Tabaxi to his left, a female Blue Dragonborn to his right, and sprawled out male Triton on the otherside of the Dragonborn. They were in a brightly decorated but still comfortably warm and inviting room.   It took Joe a couple moments to collect his otherwise hyperactive thoughts, before he decided he could not recall how exactly he arrived to this moment; but that wasn't a big issue for him. Instead he preoccupied himself with taking a better look at the environment, and the individuals who were only just rousing from sleep themselves.   Across from Joe sat an elderly man at a small wooden table that seemed to be built into the wall. The man was peacefully dozing, a wooden pike tucked between his pursed lips and occasionally releasing a wisp of blue white smoke into the warm air. Next to the Elder stood a big iron stove, a log cracking with embers within it's round belly and heating the metal canister on its surface. As the canister started to whistle, Joe watched the Elderly man lift himself from a wooden chair and move in front of the stove.   Joe grew more curious as the man busied himself by reaching for several herbs and dried spices that lined a wooden shelf above the stove itself. It was only a couple short minutes before the elderly man turned around and held out a serving tray with several mugs of steaming fragrant liquid. The smell was sweet like honey, but earthy like rosemary. Nonetheless, Joe accepted an offered mug and sipped at the hot water, feeling the calming effect as it washed over him.   After all the mugs had been taken, the Elderly man sat back down on his wooden chair just as a door to Joe's right opened from the outside. The room gave a sudden shift as a robust Human woman stepped through. For the most part, she seemed to completely ignore Joe and the strangers he woke up with, as she busied herself at the iron stove--but after a few minutes she took the empty chair by the wooden table with a plate full of food. She did not speak, but instead only pointed at the direction of the door, which Joe was more than happy to venture through behind the Tabaxi.   As Joe the Haregon stepped out into the cool air, he was almost overwhelmed at the festivity and activity that took place in front of him. It greatly reminded him of the many market places from his home of the Feywild. More than a dozen decorated wooden wagons surrounded tightly grouped tents with makeshift stalls, cookfires and tables. People shouted about the goods they were selling, enticing those around them to peruse their wares. The smell of fresh and dried herbs, abundant spices that Joe had never encountered before. The smell of roasting meat and salted fish quickly soured his stomach, but he was able to push that sensation to the side as he tried to focus on all the sights and sounds around him.
"Oh What's that!? That looks so Cool!"
- Joe, excitedly going from one stall to the next
Joe could feel his hyperactivity starting to go into overdrive as he bounced on the balls of his paws and took off into the crowded camp, a pouch of gold coins at his hip. He didn't have more than the clothing on his back, but with a little prior experience of life on the road, Joe was quick to purchase nessesities he would probably need for later. The most important was definitly getting his paws on a quiver of arrows and a bow.   It wasn't long before Joe Cool stood next to a wooden table with benches, where a trio sat separate from nearly everyone around them. Two female Humans were having a hushed argument, while a male Black Dragonborn with shining scales and an exhausted expression did his best to remain neutral.   Joe listened to the two females going back and forth before he offered a cheeky line, which made one of the two identical girls giggle at his antics. If it meant he could learn more about this new place and discover more wonderous places in his journey to one day return home, he was more than happy to fill that adventure with companions he could share stories with. All the better when he included the male Tabaxi, the male Triton, and the female Blue Dragonborn.   Just as Joe was getting ready to ask where they intended to head off to on this new adventure, he witnessed from the corner of his eye the hilarious sight of numerous stalls falling down like a set of dominos. Joe couldn't contain the laughter or the excitement as the final tent that fell immediately let loose a display of color and sound, as beautiful lights rocketed up into the night sky and exploded in even more beautiful colorful lights. Although the sound was rather uncomfortable to his large ears, his hyperactive excitement distracted him until he was pulled out of the camp by the female Blue Dragonborn.   It wasn't long before the impromptu party was outside the range and safety of the watchfires that surrounded the chaotic camp. Joe wasn't entirely too certain how long they had been running for, but after they stopped long enough to catch their breath, he took a moment to stare at the moon. It was all he needed to determine that they were headed Eastward along the ridge of a giant sand dune.   Joe only half listened to the male Tabaxi as he attempted to speak to the female Dragonborn, so he couldn't be certain what was said that seemed to upset her. Instead he was immediately transfixed on the sight on the neighboring sand dune.   Along the ridgeline, a colossal monstrosity made of nothing but bone weaved back and forth over the ridgeline. Joe wasn't sure, but he had to guess that the length of the creature was almost 100 feet if not more and it was lead by a skeletal head that easily dwarfed him and his companions 3 times over. Joe Cool had never seen something so unexplainable in all of his life, not even from his home of the Feywild.   Joe listened intently as the Tabaxi questioned the male Dragonborn, known as 'Set' as to what the creature was. Of course the male Dragonborn wasn't exactly forthcoming with any information beyond its nocturnal nature and classification as a predator. Joe chuckled to himself at that revelation, because if something so huge was considered to be prey; than it meant that something even bigger was out there in the vast desert. A scream far off in the distance and carried by the wind, put Joe slightly on edge as a paw gripped the fletching of an arrow from within the quiver at his hip.   It was a unanimous decision that mismatched party and their companions move along before they became prey themselves. After a couple more hours of slow travel through the soft windswept sand, Joe Cool witnessed a trio of Hyena chasing after a tiny lion cub, snapping at its haunches as if they were toying with their meal. This greatly upset Joe, as it appeared they were bullying the small defenseless creature, so he quickly knocked an arrow and let it loose.   It was meant to be a momentary distraction more than anything, but when the lead Hyena immediately turned its attention on the party? Joe knew he needed to act swiftly and without any hesitation. He knocked a second arrow and let it fly. He over estimated the distance but with a quick recover, he let a third arrow loose as easily as exhaling. A direct hit! Joe felt a wave of satisfaction as the arrow buried itself directly between the eyes of the Hyena and its two followers split off in opposite directions.   Joe Cool was relieved he was able to collect the three arrows and return them to his quiver as they hadn't been exceptionally cheap, and he only had a limited amount that he could carry in the quiver at his hip. His relief was shortlived however as he could feel the wind shift through the fur on his ears. Off in the distance, a wall of sand was kicked up as the wind began to grow more violent. Joe might not have experience with a storm within a desert, but he didn't need that experience to know that if they did not find cover soon--the companions could be in some serious trouble.   Joe Cool helped the companions search the immediate area and after a few seconds, a stone overhang was spotted as it jut out from the sand dune. A natural cave, not unlike the dens of his home in the Feywild and the kind his kin used, meant cover and safety from the approaching storm. The cave was small and dark but just enough room to fit everyone inside comfortably. He made his way to the back of the cave and felt the exhaustion soon taking him as he only half-heartedly listened to the exchange between the male Tabaxi and the cute female Human as they discussed magick.   Just as quickly as he found sleep, the sound of a scuffle from the front of the cave woke him--and without even a moment of thought, Joe grabbed at the bow and quiver he had made use of as a temporary pillow to let loose an arrow at the small creature in front. The arrow punched right through the creature and only slightly buried itself into the strange looking creature behind it.
