At some point around the beginning of the 21st century, the Universe got bored.
As everyone knows, the Universe's boredom is a dangerous thing. Magic was inserted into human history. As long as you could convince the Universe that reality ought to be different from the way it currently was, you could do anything. History was rewritten to include magic—people knew things hadn't always been that way, but weren't sure what it had been like before. A feeling of extreme unrest took hold of the world's population, kickstarting a major change in international and political interactions. 
And so, just like any other world-changing event, humanity turned against each other. This time, instead of divisions based upon race, gender, or religion, it was based on how each group thought the universe had changed itself.
Overall, the Universe isn't regretting it much. Things are certainly entertaining. And they saved non-magical Earth in another file... somewhere...
