Chapter 1 - Gunnar's Way

Sverrir was a powerful Chieftain in Asgard. He was called Sverrir woman-lover. He was married to Hildr the Slender, who was the daughter of Jarl Eysteinn. Sverrir was very generous and distributed all the gold and silver he owned among his men, so that in the end he had no more left. In order to accumulate more, he gathered his men and headed for Hyperborea, for the Hyperboreans were rumored to hide tons of gold and silver, but they were also familiar with trolldom.

After crossing the River of Death Ice, he fought with the Hyperboreans. Tons of gold and silver were taken as spoils of war and grave-robbing Hyperborean burial mounds. When his men were on their way back to Asgard, they saw a great frost giant standing on the opposite side of the frozen river, preventing them from continuing. But Sverrir was not afraid and chucked his spear at the frost giant, chasing it into a nearby cave. It's said that Sverrir ran after the frost giant and stuck out both of its eyes before returning home.

Sverrir and Hildr had two sons, the oldest was called Gunnarr and the youngest, Hodulfr. Sometime after their birth, Chieftain Sverrir fell in battle during his many raids. Hildr later married a chieftain named Jotmundr, and she raised Sverrir's two sons with him.

When Gunnarr was thirteen winters old, he got ready to go raiding. He gathered every man he could find, free or forced. They used many things for weapons: sticks and staves, posts and poles. When Gunnarr came into conflict with some Reavers, he rallied the troops and attacked. But his men were not used to fighting and had poor weapons; therefore, many of them fell, and some fled. In Autumn, he returned with shame, and we haven't heard of him since. That is why people call it a "Gunnar's Way", when someone set out on an expedition ill-prepared.
