Antoine Saltzwald was born of the once-prestigious House of Saltzwald that claims descent from the sons of Ignaeus Trollbane and in bygone years would style itself as a founding house of Alterac. Time’s relentless march has not been kind to the Saltzwalds, with their fortunes falling time and time and time again, their political alliances ending in disaster and their keeps falling into ruin. A branch of this house fled south many years ago, hoping to find greener pastures. There, they established themselves in the Kingdom of Stormwind, building up their estate near the town of Sunnyglade. Those that remained in Alterac continued their decline, eventually being subsumed into the nouveau riche Perroys - creating the Saltzwald-Perroy cadet branch. Many of their descendents threw their lot in with the Syndicate when their time came - hoping one final chance at a return to the storied golden age - and many of them were killed in the attempt. Antoine Saltzwald - now in his late 40s - was born and raised in Sunnyglade and enjoyed a modest life far above the peasantry but far beneath the grand prestige the stories of his family’s past tantalised him with. He became bitter and resentful - believing himself a scion of one of mankind’s founding clans denied his rightful place in the sun. As a final cruel act of fate, Sunnyglade - his home - was destroyed by the Horde’s invasion. Antoine himself lived and was able to rebuild his family’s modest fortune through various under-the-table dealings during Katrina Prestor’s corrupt reign, though with the return of King Varian Wrynn his operations took another hit as several of his associates were exposed as funneling the kingdom’s funds towards Alterac. Antoine was found innocent - the evidence inconclusive and the news of the investigation suppressed through bribery and worse … but his prestige, already in tatters, never recovered. At this point and for reasons generally shrouded in mystery, Antoine Saltzwald retired from public life and largely began to operate through a series of lieutenants and proxies - the most infamous of which are now known as the Sunnyglade Ratters.
