When article (tested for spiecies only) is created using "+" icon in category (by world's owner) and then author is changed to Writer user, there's issue with saving changes. Article is saved but user gets popup with error

Uh oh! Something went wrong! We couldn't save your changes, because either: your connection is down (so check your connection!) OR you used an unsupported character (an emoji or UTF-16 character). Remove that character and you're good to go!
(bowser gets 500 response for PATCH request)   World's owner doesn't get this popup. Issue also doesn't manifest itself when article is created by "green icon". It was also tested on Windows, MacOS and multiple browsers.

Steps to Reproduce

  • create article with "+" icon in category list (left panel)
  • change author to Writer user
  • try to edit article with this Wrtier user
  • Operating System

    Linux

    Browser

    Firefox

Does this still happen for you, because I cannot reproduce it

    MoonWolf @ 08 Dec, 2025 11:26:57

Yes it still happens to me and my friends who have Writer users in my world.

    gordrok @ 08 Dec, 2025 11:40:46

OK, it seems world-related. I don't have this issue in my other world.

    MoonWolf @ 08 Dec, 2025 11:42:33

Ah, sorry. That was my user for testing purposes. Anyway - it seems world-related. This is problematic world.

I would like a bit more info.
Does it happen to you AND your writers? If it happens to a writer can you give me a username?

    MoonWolf @ 16 Dec, 2025 07:46:32

It happens to my test user (gordrok) and for real users (it's Airwolf and gotrek12).

I have news, the problem is the relation field on the article, since it does not belong to your writer he has no access to link it, this might not be intended and a discussion will be held to decide the correct way to adress this. As a temporary fix, you can make your users as Editors

    MoonWolf @ 18 Dec, 2025 05:54:54

    Great! Thanks for the news!

    MoonWolf @ 06 Jan, 2026 01:03:48

Hello. Any news on this issue?

    Syarx @ 13 Jan, 2026 02:54:18 Assignee

Not yet, WA staff was on leave during the holidays, I will keep you informed

    Syarx @ 20 Jan, 2026 02:50:37 Assignee

A solution is being tested for release probably this week

    MoonWolf @ 20 Jan, 2026 07:55:12

    Glad to hear it! Thanks!

A release adressing this issue is out! your writers should be able to edit articles as long as they don't try to update or add a new relation to an article that they have not made

    Removed tag Cannot Reproduce
    MoonWolf @ 22 Jan, 2026 05:47:13

Unfortunately when such relation exists (added by world's owner for example), Writer is still unable to edit article. That's not ideal, but acceptable. Thank you very much for your work!

    Syarx @ 23 Jan, 2026 10:41:52 Assignee

After our fix the writer should be able to edit other article fields, for example content. Are you saying it is still erroring?

    MoonWolf @ 23 Jan, 2026 02:10:40

Yes. For example spiecies article: if world's owner sets "Geographic Distribution" field, Writer will get error popup when editing "content" field (but article gets saved nontheless). If this field is empty, no error will pop up.

    MoonWolf @ 23 Jan, 2026 02:14:58

And Writer can clear this field by himself without error.

    MoonWolf @ 04 Feb, 2026 10:37:47

Looks like this issue no longer occurs. Thank you very much!
