How to Handle Large Time Gaps in Timelines

When using Timescale Mode in a timeline, the spacing between events is proportional to the time that passed between them. This is intended to provide a clear visual representation of the distance between events—as opposed to List Mode, which shows all events in order without spacing. If you don't want event spacing to be proportional, here's a way you can work around this!

  1. Create your events ignoring the real dates. For example, if you want an event to appear close to another one, leave a 5-year gap (or lower) regardless of how many years actually passed.
  2. Then, for every event that isn't create in the proper year, do this:
    1. Edit the event.
    2. On the edit panel, scroll down and click on "Advenced Options".
    3. In the Alternative Display Date field, write the actual in-world date of the event. This will replace the displayed date in the event.

While this isn't how timescale timelines are designed to be build, it's a valid way to use the feature! For more information and help with timelines, check the guide to timelines.
