Session 32: Carrion's Link Report

General Summary

Recap:

  1. After the shafty plan to sever Daenol's connection to the lexicon was decided, a strange masked figure leading a group of levies and refugees arrived from across the river. After hearing the masked figure's voice, Eleonora and Wren were amazed to find that their old companion, Rainer, had returned; followed by a band of refugees from the Heart War.
  2. Griss'tok stuck by the Kane's ship to keep it defended while the rest of the party met up with Rainer, who was introduced to Kane and Melyre; as well as being filled in to Wren's predicament, and the situation as a whole. Rainer offered his assistance without hesitation, and the party made their way into Riverville.
  3. The same creepy man that Kane and Wren had met before greeted them, offering in a similar manner as before to lead them to the townhouse. The party accepted the invitation, and were escorted to the most notable building in town; with Kane being placed within the portable hole to keep him hidden.
  4. Inside, the same zombie-like receptionist had the party briefly wait for a meeting with the town's leader. Once they were given permission to see the town leader, Eleonora let Kane take the portable hole through a locked portion of the building while they talked with this leader, who called himself 'Chiles.'
  5. Kane discovered that this leader was clearly a much more menacing figure than he appeared to be, finding rituals and skeletons trapped within cages in this locked away laboratory. The party wasn't able to learn anything from Chiles, and as he implored them to take their leave, he seemed to have noticed something, deciding to investigate his laboratory.
  6. Kane's cover was blown, and a fight broke out between Chiles, now revealed to be the demon Daenol, and the party. Melyre was able to quickly sever the demon's connection with The Lexicon, allowing the demon to be killed much more easily. Kane delivered the final blow, and after Daenol's demise, the party decided on taking a rest while they investigated his notes.
  7. Wren discovered the demon's notes, finding out how the demon came across this dead god's corpse, and his plan to find and use a powerful necromancer as bait to gain access to the corpse's most hidden reaches of power; potentially becoming a necromantic demi-god. By the end of the hour, Wren's condition rapidly worsened however, and the party rushed to find a way to gain access to The Lexicon.
  8. Traveling through a hidden bookcase in Daenol's office, there was a path leading to a puzzle door, which Rainer was able to figure out the solution to. Past the door, it opened into a purple smoke-filled cave, and the entrance of the Lexicon, as well as the nature of the artifact itself; which was revealed to be a gargantuan skeleton buried deep beneath Riverville, its skull barely poking out into the cave.
  9. Wren fell unconscious, yet suddenly arriving behind the party was her mentor, Lian, dragging a wooden coffin behind him. Lian explained that Wren was going to die no matter what they did, but the coffin Lian brought with him contained a perfect clone of Wren that her soul would transfer to when the original body died. As such, Wren's body fell devoid of life shortly after.
  10. Wren began to see visions, first a reflection of her sister, and then their collective memories. The events of their lives transpired simultaneously, but from different perspectives, showing the story of a young traumatized Hal girl developing a split personality of their deceased sister after being orphaned by the tragedy of war. Has Rhea just been Wren's split personality this entire time? Or has Wren just been an image of Rhea's fractured consciousness, built upon the guilt of running away that fateful day, many years ago. Whichever sister is the real one will be determined by who leaves that coffin.
