Session 2: Frosty Tome Report
General Summary
Session 2 : Frosty Tomes
Due to delays from an inexperienced crew, complicated by dwindling supplies, the Evergiven was forced to make plans to put into port earlier than expected in the city of Korloss. Aldrina and Talin discovered the early murmurings of a mutinous plot among a group made up of both veteran crew and new arrivals. After reporting this treachery to Captain Durg, he set those he felt loyal to him to work monitoring this group. To curtail the growth of this movement, Durg also put on a “feast” and gave a rousing speech, in the galley, to the remaining crew. Also, during the voyage, it was also discovered that there was an additional stowaway on board the ship. Fresenius, a small and unassuming human, quickly pitched in where he could and gave his level best to get into Durg’s good graces.
Jake, the first mate of the Evergiven, along with the party went about watching for signs of mutiny. This culminated with a late night assailant being dispatched by Jake in the passageway outside of the captain’s quarters. After this event, Durg ensured the compliance of the rest of the mutineers by forcing them to clean the blood from the scene of Jake’s handiwork. These steps maintained the peace until arriving in port where crew changes could hopefully be made.
Korloss
The situation in Korloss City appeared dire upon arrival. The port had been flooded with refugees displaced by the invasion of Alomar. The party immediately went about attempting to meet with Rine Krieger, the Marquette of Korloss. While making their way to the dignitary reception building Durg was “hit” with a vision, causing him to lose his constitution, which showed him the grand palace library and the face of an exceedingly old man in robes. In the building Rak’mar was immediately recognized by Dmitri, who was an old friend and mentor. Dmitri had climbed the ranks of the Korlossian military since Rak’mar had last seen him and informed the party that so long as Rak’mar was with them, they had an open invitation to the palace. Dmitri also informed the party that supplies couldn’t be procured by the party due to the fact that the dock’s main warehouse had recently been completely robbed of all supplies.
At the sight of Rak’mar, the party was given a heroes’ welcome, and Durg subtly led the others along the path he’d seen in his vision to take them to the library. “You won’t find the Sage there–he’s gone to his mountain” the guard told them as they entered. “Not a problem,” Aldrina replied, “but perhaps some refreshment is in order? Do you have something we could…imbibe while we wait?” Once in the archive, Fresenius and Aldrina meticulously pored over the shelved books. They found books ranging from the mundane to abstract celestial occult. The most important discovery lay on the desk of Vitez Ritter, sage of Korloss. A complex collection of correlations between celestial events and the world-changing events of Lyceia. Ritter entered the chamber wearing an adventurers’ pack that was entirely too heavy for his archaic frame to manage.
Vitez was taken aback by the amount of knowledge that the party was able to glean from his scribblings in such a short period of time. He offered to answer the party’s questions before he had to leave on a journey from which he would likely never return. The party, recognizing this wizened man’s inability to fulfill the mission, offered their assistance. Ritter gave a look of relief at this news and the life immediately left his body. Aldrina cast detect magic and discovered that the sage had imbued a locket with his very spirit. He led them to a secret chamber that was last entered by the Wayfaring Strangers some 100 years ago. The party was advised to open the drawers of the desk which contained an exquisite emerald, which became Vitez’s new temporary home, and an ancient map that was being preserved through enchantment. This map showed the world before the War of the Gods in which Vecna was defeated by Pelor, Mellandra and Kord. Durg immediately set to work reconciling the map with historic and geographical changes that had taken place since its creation and found the port that had been shown to him in Everkeep Harbor. The party quickly decided that in order to make the journey, they would have to recover the supplies that had been taken by a new criminal element within the city.
Freeing Up Supplies
Rak’mar, Leo and the rest of the party were invited into the war table to plan an attack on the underground warehouse where the supplies were reportedly being held. Once the plan was set, the party stealthily approached the underground warehouse, and after scoping the room, Durg grabbed a piece of lumber from a pile of goods, hoisted it onto his shoulder, and walked up to a massive half-ogre who sat partially reclined on a protesting barstool. “Where do you want me to put this?” Durg asked, before swinging it up and clocking the surprised ogre across the jaw. Durg dropped the lumber and drew his blades, slicing at the heavy flesh before the ogre had a chance to recover, but the beast was quick to its feet and grappled the captain, squeezing the wind out of him. Dmitry immediately charged in, and was hit with a sleeping spell that laid him out flat. Rak’mar, seeing the plight of his newfound acquaintance, took two huge steps into the room, slammed his fists together, and looked for how to make maximum impact. He picked up a round table and slammed it against the wall, crushing the poor soul who had the poor fortune to be sitting there.
Leo, in rat form, scurried up a wall and leapt at one of the unsuspecting thieves, shifting into his normal form and bringing his staff down with both hands. One of the thieves–wearing robes–muttered under his breath and conjured a fireball that glanced harmlessly off Durg’s armor, but lit a pile of sails on fire. The smoke and flames distracted the other thieves as they tried to attack, rendering them less than effective, except one who slipped under the haze and slit Dmitri’s throat with his blade while grinning wickedly up at Rak’mar. Karissa tried to command the grinning thief to flee, but he resisted, and mildly terrified she slipped behind the table Rak’mar had left against the wall.
Durg valiantly wrestled his arms free, swinging wildly with his scimitar and rapier at the half-ogre’s head. Unsurprisingly the half-ogre was less than thrilled and flipped his hold on Durg to grab him by the ankles, swinging him overhead and smashing him against the ground. Stunned, the captain tried to roll to one side as the beast grabbed his great club and came around to finish the job.
Oblivious to Karissa’s attempt to hide, Rak’mar grabbed the table and threw it across the room, pinning and neatly slicing one of the thieves in half, his legs crumpling to the floor. Now exposed, the mage thief cast a freezing spell on Karissa as she tried to run away, and the frost crept across her skin and slowed her escape. Fresenius, muttering as he stared intently at one of the thieves, attempted to mentally attack one of the thieves, but finds his efforts rebuffed.
As the ogre swung down at Durg, Rak’mar twisted a braid that opened a portal in the path of the club, sending it smashing down on the mage’s foot. The mage cried out in pain, only to be confronted by Rak’mar, who quickly dispatched him.
Though spared the attack, Durg isn’t looking good, and Aldrina slips over and blesses him. The ambush was hit or miss for a moment and almost resulted in Dmitri’s death. The party eventually overcame the enemy element and made some interesting discoveries. The leader of what mostly appeared to be typical bandits took on a demonic visage and another immolated himself using a talisman worn about his neck. Both of these enemies were dispatched, but one of the rank and file was kept alive and was bound for questioning.
