Session 46: Caer Calidyrr

General Summary

Session 15 APR 2020: We split up on our different missions while Seebo copies a spell from a scroll. Lily Valette and I go shopping for instruments that we can have made from our dragon bits, while Lorin and TokTok go looking for a ship to take us out to fight the Kraken. Afterwards, Valette and I play a wildly awesome concert at the Suds and Sails tavern, which lands us some gold and a small share in the bar!   After, we all meet up and discuss our plan of action. We ahve a letter for Dared Kenrick that serves as our introduction from Laurel. We hope this will get us on our way. We go to the castle and present ourselves; we get to an audience by mid-afternoon. The castle gives the impression of “old money” with a long and storied history. The castle is large, with high vaulted ceilings; the audience chamber is ornate and has a man at the business end.   We present the letter and plead our case. Lord Kenrick is sympathetic and agrees to help. However, he cannot compel a ship captain to stay and fight, so we must persuade one to help. To that end, he gives us a “royal” seal to demonstrate that we have his blessing for this mission.   We split into two units: one, to find us a ship, and two, to research the Kraken. We feel that we must be prepared for any variables in this fight, including just knowing where the fight will take place: sea, land, or (yikes) underwater.   Ship procurement: They (Det, Lorin, and Valette) talk to the Harbormaster and he recommends the Nemesis, a ship similar to the Green Fisher with which we are already familiar. With the royal seal, and a monetary inducement, we get the captain to take us to the spot and not immediately run away, but probably not fight with us.   Kraken Research: There seems to be a magical war between the Thurmish and the Fey. The Fey seem to be practitioners of necromancy and the Thurmish hail from far to the east, and are tradesmen. Nobody seems to have seen the Kraken, but several ships have gone down in an area half a day’s sailing away, where the weather has taken a turn for the worse. The Kraken has a resistance to lightning, and can channel lightning. It also has lots of tentacles and likes to grab stuff. We also learn that, for the areas in question, most of the ships that enter are getting lost at sea; there doesn’t seem to be a rhyme or reason, just any ship gets attacked.   We board the Nemesis, and sail to the affected location. We find under the water, a ship that has been subsumed by coral, and is half-submerged at a 45 degree angle. There is a lot of dark, turbulent water around it. The Nemesis is willing to get within about ½ mile, and will drop us off there. Our water-fighting spells and preparations will have to be sufficient.   We transfer to the partially submerged ship, and TokTok casts Detect Creature on the Kraken. He can definitely tell that the Kraken is nearby and perceive its direction. As we explore the ship, we detect others nearby: Merfolk, perhaps. We also find some ruined foodstuffs, 5 barrels of ale (tar-sealed) 20 Healer’s kits (wax-sealed), 1000 yds of sailcloth (oiled), 200 ballista bolts, 500 ft uncut silk rope, and 4 kegs of resin.   We pass further into the wreck, and encounter something that forces initiative rolls! See y’all next week!
