Session 2: A Break in Monotony Report

General Summary

Recap:

  1. After several months of tedious learning and training, the party is pulled aside after one of their classes by their teacher, Defender Figwell. Apparently, a museum's reopening in town, and the curator requires some small assistance from the Guidewind Corporate. Feeling like this might be a moderately interesting opportunity, Defender Figwell assigns Squad 13M to this task, and tells them to meet with the museum's owner and curator, a gentleman named Curious.
  2. Attempting to prepare for potential danger ahead, the party does some shopping before meeting with the curator, spending some of the gold they had acquired in their time as apprentices.
  3. Once they've finished gearing up, the party heads towards the museum, seeing that it's an older building that appears to have been out of commission for the last two years. Regardless, the party enters and meets with the museum owner Curious, an older tiefling gentleman who's delighted to see them and welcomes them in.
  4. Curious briefs the party on their task, to acquire a potential artifact from within an Underdark break-in that occurred within the Tennsworth mines. According to the testimony of the miners, the breakthrough was accidental, and was abandoned once a potential threat was discovered. The party then heads off towards the mines to offer their assistance.
  5. Once inside, the party discovers the breakthrough, seeing haphazardly left mining equipment, as well as a large cavern littered with strange flora. They quickly discover the creature mentioned by the miners; a pale hunched humanoid, with a frog-like head, and blinding fluorescent eyes.
  6. When Lia attempted to befriend the creature, it seized an opportunity to retaliate, displaying the extent of harm its eyes could produce. The party slew the creature in their defense, and continued further into the cave; now treading more carefully. That is at least, for most of them.
  7. Sam split from the group, opting to travel on the left side of the small lake in the cave's center. Her keen senses saved her from the worst, but she was still assaulted by a large creature that burst from the lake's depths. The creature grabbed Sam, then dashed back within the water. The party, trying to save their companion, rushed in after her, with some being dragged into the depths alongside Sam, and others attacking from afar.
  8. Ultimately, the creature and any secondary assailants were killed, saving Sam, and allowing the party the opportunity they needed to reach the candlelit pedestal at the rear of the cave. On the pedestal was a pair of goggles featuring crystal lenses, which Erika could clearly deduce as magical. The cave wasn't over though, as a tunnel that burrowed further deeper, potentially to more water below, was discovered. A quick unanimous decision to cut their venture at their success was made, and the party decided to make their way out of the cave, feeling like it would be better to warn their superiors than step in themselves.
  9. The artifact they found was indeed magical, as confirmed by the museum owner Curious, who was ecstatic to even see that it existed. His happiness was overruled by his judgement however, as he felt that per the party risking their lives for such an item, it was their call to decide whether or not they should sell it to Curious; regardless, the tiefling was entirely satisfied with their work. The group decided on keeping the goggles for themselves, and instead offering Curious some of the other things they'd found within the cave, which he happily accepted.
  10. Returning to Guidewind, the party made their report to Defender Figwell, who seemed inquisitive about the creature they had battled there. Her curiosity turned into concern though, as something about the situation the party had found themselves in struck her as troubling. She congratulated the party on a job well done, and rushed off. Shortly after some minor revelry, the party rested, satisfied with their break in the monotony.
