The Withered

Civilization has sunk down to the world of the underdark, abandoning the surface. What remains of the surface population resides in the city of Finpaz (Feen-pahs), built upon the base of a stalagmite located in the center of a deep lake. Knowledge of the collapse of the surface world has faded into the background and an oppressive oligarchy of sages intends on keeping it that way. It has become taboo to discuss leaving Finpaz. Those heard discussing this idea are promptly arrested and silenced. Most beings have become content with the world they are now a part of, but for a few, the urge to ascend remains.
