Midnight Escape

General Summary

Following a bloody skirmish, the group interrogates the lonely survivor of the attackers, a man named Gervais. The man confesses to know nothing of the attempt on Hallie's life: Jules, their leader, hired him to simply slow down and scare a group of nobles. Figuring the man was telling the truth, Corvino handed a silver piece to the man and allowed him to depart, on the condition he should forget all that happened that day.   On the body of the leader, Corvino found a piece of correspondence which indicated that the man was indeed Jules, Hallie's lover. Additionally, the man wore a gold signet on his index finger, with an inscription of a chalice, full of ale, and the letter "C". Amelia and Fionna searched the body of the halfling assassin, finding the remains of the poison used on Hallie, which Kushala identified as being "The Black Scar", a substance used amongst nobles when they wish to send a message to their enemies.   Eventually, the caravan resumed their march. The group convinced Alyse to allow Amelia to accompany Hallie in her carriage. On the other vehicle, the group discussed if they should help the girl escape, with Corvino arguing that living with Olivier was actually a pretty sweet deal, while Fionna believed the right thing was for her to be truly free, living her dream.   When they stopped to have lunch, Fionna and Amelia confessed to Hallie that Jules was amongst the assassins, leaving the girl grieving and heartbroken. The friends decided to give her the better part of the day to decide whether or not she would like to live with Olivier, or escape somewhere else. Meanwhile, the group convinced Alyse to slow down the march of the caravan, as they still had plentiful time to reach Avitoise, arguing they could use the rest. As travel resumed, Amelia confesses Alyse she told Hallie of Jules fate, to which the escort casually replied "And here I was thinking I was the one who didn't like the girl!".   When the group stopped to make camp, Trygve offered Pierrepont three pieces of copper to help him feed his daughters, a gesture which the man took as some kind of bribe. The following ruckus raised suspicions on Alyse, who insisted on taking the first watch with the orc, in order to question. Meanwhile, Hallie confessed she'd like to travel with Fionna and Amelia, rather than spend her days trapped in some mansion. As night fell, Alyse and Trygve argued, with the woman calling the giant unworthy and a waste of space. In fact, she admitted everyone - herself included - were a waste of space, with the only worthy people being those she follows, Qailag, more precisely. Despite being suspicious of the orc's intentions, the halfling went to sleep and the second watch seized this opportunity to escape with both Hallie and a very confused group of mercenaries, who had no idea of this plot. Fionna scattered the horses while the remaining group escaped eastward taking a turn southeast, after sufficient distance had been made.   Over the next few days, the group made way towards the lands of the dwarves, through rocky hills. On the third day, they stumbled upon an isolated village. Upon close inspection, they found the populace to be gone, with trails of blood, more than a week old, coming from within buildings with shattered doors. Additionally, tufts of multicolored hair laid on the floor of multiple residences, as well as broken makeshift spears, apparently made from splintered human bones. While Amelia took care of Hallie, Trygve and Kushala examined two nearby farms, only to discover the animals sheltered within to have died from dehydration. Figuring this situation was above what they could currently handle, the group headed southwards with haste, leaving the gruesome carnage behind.
