The story so far

The Heroes are on the trail of a mad priest of Ilvir, Xantosa, who seems hellbent on collecting monster parts and causing misery in his wake.

They have asked one of their friends to investigate the legends and lore of the region. Maybe this will offer insight into his plans.

This is the continuation of Session 180 - The Ancient Grove of Alithani.

Location - Sarkum Castle in the Kingdom of Kanday.

Part 1 - Revelations of Obsidipor

Edelina, art by Artbreeder
Edelina Sprunstone spent the last few days studying the myths and legends of the region. She is fascinated by what she has learned from the common folk.

In the mythic past, the god Ilvir created the Crab-Titan Obsidipor. This unique Ivashu angered the Adaenum god Manaclir, the Master of Wind and Wave, believing that Obsidipor was planning to usurp his title as the Lord of Storms. The gigantic Ivashu and demigod clashed in an epic struggle that devastated the world. The land bridge between the Anafla Island and the Hârnic mainland sunk beneath the sea, and the ground was stained with Obsidipor's crimson blood. Eventually, Manaclir drove his great spear through Obsidipor's Heart, ending the Ivashu's existence. The legends say this deed happened in Loza bay.

Local fables also record that Obsidipor was so huge that his body parts were harvested by the local tribes and the Ilvirian faithful. Some were used to make weapons and armor, and others scattered and hidden. The distinctive red granite rocks of Obsini Quarry and other locations in the region result from the blood spilled from Obsidipor's wounds.

Edelina has discovered that there is a temple is dedicated to Obsidipor in the remote hamlet of Loza, and it holds a relic, Obsidipor's Heart. The heroes thank Edelina for her help and offer payment, but she believes these legends need to be recorded and only asks that the heroes keep her informed of anything to do with Obsidipor. The party plans to visit this temple at Loza but first, Odin wants to check out the Obsini Quarry.

Location - Obsini Quarry and Korri Abbey in the Kingdom of Kanday.

Part 2 - A Quarry and the Cathedral

Obsini Quarry has a dozen workers cutting and shaping the mine's distinctive red granite. The Quarrymaster informs them that the dangerous priest of Ilvir, Xantosa, visited a few weeks ago, and he antagonized the miners. He told them off for their desecration of such a holy site, took some rock fragments, and made veiled threats. The Quarrymaster considered hiring some guards, but the priest has not made another appearance.

Odin quickly visits the nearby Checkered Shield chapterhouse at Korri Cathedral and updates the commander on the threat to the Mine. The Knight agrees to assist the miners if they are endangered, partly because the Bishop of Korri will be angry if the stone supply for the ongoing Cathedral construction is disrupted.

Location - Bobor Hill in the Kingdom of Kanday.

Part 3 - Night Lions

The heroes journey to Loza, but they rest up for the night in the Bobor Hills due to delays. Unfortunately, they are stalked by three large black cats, Night Lions. Fortuitously, the felines are incredibly unlucky and take a beating before one is killed, and the others driven off. Odin has noticed that the local wildlife appears to be agitated lately, but at least now he has a new black fur cloak.

Location - Loza Hamlet in the Kingdom of Kanday.

Part 4 - Temple of Obsidipor the Fallen

Loza is a small village with only around 70 inhabitants. The village was previously much larger, and ruins of buildings are strewn about. In the center of the village is a temple standing on a rocky outcrop, and just offshore is a small island with a dome-shaped structure. Both of these buildings are elaborate and covered with Ilvirian iconography.

The party is greeted by curious locals and is directed to the local Inn and the temple. The Church of Obsidipor the Fallen is accessed through an underground passage, and during the day, the doors are always open. The characters are and warmly met by acolytes and the temple High Priest Roibert. The party decides to immediately tell him everything they know and warn him about the dangerous Priest Xantosa. As they talk, his friendly demeanor darkens, and he enters into a very long and very imaginative burst of profanity. He has indeed met this priest, and it did not go well. He was here a few weeks ago, threatened his acolytes, and stole many of the temple holy texts. Thinking a moment, Roibert announced that the stolen texts contain records of where Obsidipor's relics (the physical remains of the great ivashu ) now rest.

Xantosa also visited the Sepulcher of Obsidapor's Heart and was last seen entering it. Roibert is now concerned this mad priest may have stolen or damaged the priceless relic. Unfortunately, he cannot enter the sepulcher as the magical stone guardian at its entrance no longer follows his instructions. He is concerned that it may attack him. After the heroes volunteer to investigate, he gives Odin five Meteorite Iron Arrowheads. These will be needed if the guardian turns violent.

After long conversations and comparing notes with Roibert, they learn that Xantosa originated from the Kingdom of Orbaal and was involved with the Jarinese resistance movements battling their Ivinian overlords. Roibert noted that Xantosa hates Ivinian's with a passion and anyone else who disagrees with him. He could be wanting to unleash a monster or recreated Obsidipor on them.

Part 5 - The Heart of Obsidipor

The party borrows the priest's boat and visits the sepulcher. Over the doorway, they spot a stone statue of Ilvir, in his most represented form, a snake. As they near the door, it moves and attacks, whipping its tail at the heroes, but the heroes make quick work of the Stone Guardian. Odin's meteor iron arrows are particularly effective. The door has another surprise, a well-hidden Magical Rune Trap, and a cloud of poisonous gas envelopes the heroes. Luckily they hold their breath at the right moment.

Inside, they see Obsidipor's Heart. This 2 ft wide stone object generally resembles a human heart with reddish veins. The chamber's inside walls are painted with an elaborate fresco of a giant crab-like humanoid monster stuck in the back with a spear from an ugly man during a great storm. The heroes are suspicious and closely examine the heart, finding nothing unusual. Odin suspecting an elaborate illusion closes his eyes and approaches the heart. It is indeed solid but sticky very sticky. His hand adheres to the heart, which spouts stumpy legs and the great fanged maw. The heart is a Llewedarrig (or Harnic Mimic) in disguise. The hungry Ivashu takes huge bites at Odin as he tries to rip himself free. Abaddon manages to avoid the worst attacks by keeping his staff from being stuck to the shapechanger. After Odin tears himself free, minus a bit of skin; the party pummels the creature into a gelatinous mass. It will not be troubling anyone again.

When High Priest Roibert learns that the heart is gone and the heroes witness another spectacular barrage of profanities, after which he offers to help the adventurers in any way possible. He remembers the holy texts included legends and some possible locations which may hide relics of Obsidipor, which he shares with the party.

Earl Milaka had a shield made from Obsidipor's shell, although, the Rethemi stole this during Ezar's War. Another shield may still be in the hands of the Lord of Isos Manor. One of Obsidipor's eyes is buried with the remains of a legendary warrior a Jarinese chieftain Agronai the Shrewd, and his brothers. This burial mound is said to be near Derula Manor. One of Obsidipor's fangs is said to be hidden somewhere in the ruins of Aztark Manor.

To be continued.

Adaenum Tribal Nation

The Adaenum are hardy and insular barbarians of Jarinese descent who live on the isle of Anfla, off the southwestern coast of Kanday. Scholars believe their original tribal range covered much of southern Kanday.

Their oral traditions are ripe with heroic tales of gods, incredible sea monsters, giants, and demons.

Meteorite Iron Arrowheads.

These were donated to the church late last year by the traveling Jarinese weaponcrafter Cearbhall Ciernack.

These arrowheads are comprised of adamantine, an extremely hard, dark alloy. When used by a suitable weapon they will function as a Masterwork (+2) item.
