Session 34: Owlbears and interplanetary adventures

General Summary

Now that we finally have some mercenaries, it is time to visit the Giff again. We head out into the mountains, Skrik leads the way using the map he made last time. The primary entrance looked quite well guarded last time. So we decide to circle around the peak, to see if there are any other entrances.   While circling around the peak, we run into a giant on the other side of a bridge. Janey sends Mihri to investigate, but he gets hit by a rock that was thrown by the Giant. This giant could be very dangerous, and we prepare for the worst. Luckily, Voron knows the language of the giants and tries to talk to it. After some gibberish and pointing, Voron tells us that we’re actually on the wrong mountain.   After retracing our steps back down the mountain and up the correct mountain, we arrive at the entrance to the Giff camp. However, it is getting dark so we move a distance away from the entrance, and make camp for the night. Janey tries out one of her new spells to set up an alarm, just in case. Valstrax makes us some food and we decide the watch orders. Skrik will take the first one, after that I will take my turn, then I will wake up Janey and then Valstrax will take a watch while he starts with breakfast.   Most of the night was uneventful. Skrik ran into Tango and Cash again, they told him about the same as the guild did. The Giff had become less aggressive as of late, perhaps they got what they needed. During the last watch, Valstrax spotted two owlbears and Janey’s alarm went off. They woke the rest of us up too, since the owlbears were closing in. While the owlbears were distracted by Letholdus’s suicidal charge at them, we shot at them from the cover of Janey’s magical hut. With some clever tactics, we took them down and Valstrax had some extra meat to prepare for breakfast.   Having rested and eaten, we headed up to the Giff. We were stopped halfway up by a patrol who demanded to know why we were here. We let Valstrax do the talking, as he’s best at it. He explained that we were here on the guild’s authority and wanted to know what they were up to over here. One of the Giff escorted Valstrax, Janey, and Kali to the captain up top. The rest of us had to wait with the other guards.   After a while they returned, and the Giff told us to leave. We weren’t even down the slope before Janey exploded and told us all about what she had seen in the base. Apparently these Giff are interplanetary travelers. I don’t know how that is possible, but that would explain what we saw at that crashed ship. They had apparently been busy since the last time we were there. They had set up watchtowers, and a ballista was now guarding the entrance. On the grounds behind the ballista they saw several Giff training with those weapons we had looted off them when we got ambushed. She told me she saw how they operated it, maybe we can get it to work now! When they got to the captain he told them they had stopped raiding caravans because their ‘mission’ was completed, whatever that means. Valstrax mentioned that they are now searching for something called a Spelljamming helm, for their ship. An alternative would be to get in touch with an organisation known as the Arcane. We all never heard about any of those, so we decided we should ask Elberos when we can. We also decided to do our own research, and the closest library would be the one in Lundyn. So that would be our next stop.   Having found out more about what the Giff were doing here, we decided to go back to Donner Keep to report back to the guild. The trip down the mountain was easier than the climb up, so we got back to Donner Keep pretty fast. We paid the mercenaries for the second day, and also for a third as promised. Now it was time to plan for our trip to Lundyn. I’ve never been outside dwarven territory before. I hope they have good ale in the human cities...
