Session 33: We need mercenaries

General Summary

We were back in Donner Keep, having some breakfast in the morning. We discussed what to do next, and talked about the rumors going around. Apparently the Giff were still attacking caravans. Not surprising, since we left their base of operations untouched. The Giff still being a problem didn’t sit well with us, so we decided to make that our priority. Their base did look pretty dangerous though… So we decided to hire some help before we would head out.   Before looking for some help, we headed to the guild to pick up the quest. Adrach was manning the desk and told us that the quest remained the same as last time. We are to figure out what the Giff are up to, and take out the threat if possible. Adrach also told us that the attacks on caravans had stopped recently, so something might’ve changed.   Having picked up the quest, we headed to a rundown building called “Harold's Hirelings for Hire”. We were surprised that the door was still locked. We checked at a nearby vegetable merchant and found out that Harold doesn’t open up shop earlier than the afternoon. I figured we could wait but the others wanted to get this done, so Skrik opened up the door like it was nothing and we headed inside.   The inside was just as rundown as the outside, and there was no one downstairs. Skrik checked upstairs and found Harold sleeping and signs of some heavy drinking. Valstrax prepared some breakfast in the kitchen, while I poured him some breakfast ale. Nothing better for those hangovers.   With the breakfast prepared we headed upstairs to wake him up, but that proved a challenge. We tried nudging, yelling, and even slapping him in the face; nothing helped. The one thing that helped was Skrik using our new handkerchief to create a hole under his bed, causing Harold to fall into it together with his bed. Harold was obviously surprised to wake up in a hole, and more so to find his bed in the hole and the hole being in his bedroom. We helped him and his bed out of the hole and gave him some ale, which he quickly replaced with his own bottle of stronger alcohol. Getting downstairs, we explained to Harold that we wanted to hire some mercenaries. Harold told us that we didn’t have any for hire, some elf with golden armor had offered them a hefty sum of gold and had taken them all with him towards Dasgoul. This was a bit of a problem, we needed mercenaries but that elf had taken them. We could wait until the next adventurer's trial is over, but that would take a week. We decided to check around town to try and get some more info about that elf. If that turned out to take too long, we’d wait for the next trial, and new mercenaries.   Since we were asking around, we also did some shopping at the same time. We followed Valstrax to a leatherworking store where he looked for a fur coat. Nothing in the shop fit him properly, so he ordered one custom made from several direwolf hides and some strange panther pelt. It would take a while though, and his measurements had to be taken. Skrik, Voron and I went to try and gather some more info in the meantime. Skrik went his own way, perhaps to check with the more shady types in Donner Keep. Voron and I went to the market, closer to Hirelings for Hire. A spice merchant had a good view on Harold’s establishment and did see the elf with the golden armor. He could tell me that he had long brown hair, but didn’t know more than that. I did need to buy some spices from him in order to get him to talk, but that’s ok. I'm sure Valstrax will use it to make something delicious, though that wasabi is quite spicy.   When we all got back to the leatherworking store, we discussed what to do. We could go off on a wild goose chase to try and find that elf and hire some of those mercenaries, or we could wait for a week. We decided to just wait for the mercenaries to be ‘restocked’.   Most of the others did some training that week, Skrik also helped Harold with some tasks. I went down to Donner City to see if I could find any diamonds there, sadly no luck. I spend the rest of the week finally finishing up the spider fang dagger, now we only need some poison.   After the adventurer’s trial had happened, several new mercenaries were available at Harold’s. We were able to pick up 4 extra helpers for our upcoming fight with the Giff, I hope that’ll be enough… We’ll find out when we get there, first we’ll have to do some hiking.
