Session 12: Meeting Elberos Omacaryn

General Summary

As we stay at the Marsh Inn, paid for by the Omacaryn brothers for this night, we enjoy some minor revelry on a job well done in getting the caravan to its final destination. We had a rocky start of the trip with the tribal warriors attacking, but after that first day, things went a lot better. Not sure if that's because we shed some 'dead weight'. Enki and Brynn were great companions, and Traki will be missed. Bobaku was gone too quickly for me to really get to know him any. I just know he could turn into a big puppy.   Skrik brings up the idea of making a hammock for me, so I could sleep comfortably on a ship next time we have to travel by boat. He asked the innkeep if we could maybe use some sheets for that. Probably best not to even try that. Janey tries to make something out of rope, with a strange name I can't recall right now. She said she'd tried it before, but she doesn't seem to feel very confident. And it shows, as she doesn't get very far before deciding that she can't do it. I say that maybe we can just get a thick, sturdy rope that I can coil over, and I'll keep myself balanced. We'll have to try that when we get onto another ship.   We turn in for the night, and when we wake up, we have some breakfast and go out to do a bit of shopping. Janey's been all giddy to check bookshops in this town. We find one, called 'Nooks & Crannies', after a little looking and asking. We go in, and talk a bit with the owner. After a bit, Skrik runs off to find a book about snakes, and how to milk their venom. He somehow manages to get a nice discount on his book, but is asked to wait outside because his talk about crime-related activities is making the owner uncomfortable. Janey goes off to find some books, and Duldar manages to find some books on smithing, and something about heaven and light. The people here are kinda strange. I have a look in the cooking section, and find 4 books that look interesting. Sadly, 2 of them are in Dwarvish, so back on the shelf they go. The 3rd one is in Common, but it just talks about how to make things smell how you want them to. Which doesn't really help me in cooking. So, back on the shelf. The last one is called 'Cooking in the Jungle', and seems to have been written by Wood Elves. I bring it back to the front desk, since this one seems like it could be useful.   We put all the books on the counter, and Janey reluctantly puts 'Running in the Apocalypse' back on the shelf, because it was 30 gold by itself. And that just seemed a bit expensive for what she described as someone's diary. We get the rest of the books. 3 for Janey, 1 of which is about ethics, which she gives to Skrik so he can learn why it's wrong to steal things. I'm not sure that one's going to turn out the way she thought it would. I didn't really check the other 2 books she got, but they were really cheap, so I'm guessing it's some light reading. Duldar has his 2 books on smithing and heavenly light or whatever, and I have my cookbook.   Due to the faffing about in the bookstore, and some shenanigans with a not-so-blind beggar outside that Skrik pointed out and sorta threatened with a dagger.. It's a long story, I don't wanna get into it. Anyway, it's getting close to noon, and we need to head over to "The Eye of the Beholder" restaurant to meet with the Omacaryn brothers' uncle that made them come all the way over here. They seem really anxious, pacing around outside. It wasn't noon yet, so I don't know why they were worried. Should've told us to meet them sooner if they wanted us to be earlier. Anyway, we go inside, and the whole place is empty. 1 table is set up to have people eat at it, so we are led to that table. There's a big chair, and the brothers sit down next to it. We all sit down, me on my coils because I don't really play nice with most humanoid chairs.   The waiter asks us what we'd like to eat and drink, and I ask for a dish that the chef would deem fit for a Naga. Janey asks for some fancy things for her and Skrik. Voron asks for something without meat, and Duldar asks for some mutton. As for the drinks, Skrik gets some "pig's blood", whatever that is. Janey gets some fancy wine. Voron asks for some normal water, and Duldar orders some "Skullbuster Ale" for him and myself. He seems to think it's strong, and sips it slowly. I take a sip as well. It tastes alright, but I fear I'm not getting the full experience of it.   Before we can dig in (Mostly Skrik), a door appears by the big chair, and a sharply dressed High Elven gentleman steps out. Elboros, as he's called, talks about how he feels everyone should have a finer standard for goods, like himself. As we eat our lunch, the brothers that were fairly.. uppity.. during the trip just sit there in silence, and only nod in agreement when Elboros tasks them with setting up businesses suited to them in various towns. Adorellan is told to set up his spice business in Dasgoul, Volodar is told to take his hunting to Lundyn with the forests nearby, and Uldraïnn is told to keep his relations with the Dwarves healthy, and set up shop in Castleinn.   Elboros also tells us that if we go to one of the brothers in any of those towns, they can contact him, and that he'd be happy to buy any magic items we find that we wish to sell. He also talks about the occassional meteor impacting, and that there are 'rare metals' to be found at those places. Then he informs us that there was a meteor strike North of Donner Keep, about a month before, and that people seem to be disappearing around that area since.   Then, he informs us of rumors surrounding Khundrukar Keep, supposedly Northeast of Donner Keep, where the legendary Dwarven smith Durgat-Din would have lived. And that the items that he'd created might still be there. But, the Deep Roads leading to this place have collapsed, and nobody knows the exact location in the mountains.   After we finish our lunch, he seems to encourage us to let people know about him, and his business of acquiring things one desires to have. Duldar shows him the small boomstick we found, and Elboros tells us it's called a 'pistol', but that he hasn't seen them for nearly 600 years. And the hippo people that attacked us are called 'Giff'. Janey is excited to learn that Elboros lived through the Revolution. We are told he has time for 1 more question, and Valstrax asks him about the pendant he found in the desert that led him to be here. Apparently, it's a symbol of the Boros Legion, but they should've all been destroyed long ago.   After that, we all split up to take care of some things around town. Skrik collects some generous donations from passersby, and gives it to me. Being curious about the Empire that everybody's been talking about today, I go back to Nooks & Crannies to buy that expensive book we put back earlier. I'm leafing through it a bit when Janey comes in from checking out books owned by private collectors. I give her the Apocalypse book, because it's nowhere near as fun as they said books were. I think they lied to me about books being fun.   Skrik comes in with some scraps from Eye of the Beholder's leftovers, and I study them with my cookbook handy to see if I can maybe make something similar to their yummy food. But with less expensive ingredients. I'm all for nice food, but I can't justify things that pricy.   Before bed, we settle on going back to Donner Keep, but we're going by boat this time. From Slowbel to Dasgoul, from Dasgoul to Leverbad, and then by road from Leverbad to Donner Keep. There should be about 2 weeks left before the next Guild test, so we could try looking for that meteor and see what's going on with that.
