Session 9: Quiet day about town

General Summary

We finally arrived in Kampbel, thank the gods, and it was decided we would stay here for two to three days. No offense to the lovely goliaths, but I was really starved for some good old-fashioned modern civilization. At the time of our arrival, the sun’s orbit long since began its decline so we unanimously decided to find ourselves an establishment of refreshments and rest. Upon finding such a place, locally known as the Fallen Mountain Inn, we inquired about a small number of objectives. Firstly, I was most pleased to find out this remote location had a library of sorts, and was determined to visit it – albeit the following morrow, after I had had some time to recuperate. Furthermore, there was an Adventurer’s Guild outpost here, where we, under the membership of Brynn and Valstrax, could endeavour to earn some coin and prestige by fulfilling one or several quests. But first, the evening.
We arranged for some accommodation for the night, and Brynn pursued some income of his own by playing for the crowd, which consisted mostly of people of the dwarven persuasion. I helped in a small way by making him an elegant panflute I once saw the great Raeneril Entris play on – but that is another story. We were notified that he had not been the only silver dragonborn to cross this quaint town, and the news did seem to have some impact with Brynn. Nevertheless, he played adequately, gathering some golden wealth in the process. My other compatriots, on the other hand, were not acting quite as refined. If I recall correctly, they were having a ‘drinking contest’. In short, they were testing themselves with alcohol, to see who could stay upright the longest. It seemed a tad unfair to me since, to my understanding, Valstrax cannot be poisoned and alcohol seemed not to have any effect on him. I thought Duldar had the same common sense as I did when it came to this, but alas, his dwarven pride seemed to overrule his reason. It came as no surprise, then, when Valstrax won the contest, although I do have to say the other players did put up a rather impressive fight. There was much merriment and quite decent food to be had before we all retreated for our night’s rest.
The following morning, after we Valstrax had cooked us some nourishment, we went into town. First, we went to the Guild’s outpost to find ourselves some quests. There were three suitable options for bronze adventurers (Valstrax’s and Brynn’s rank, as neither I nor Duldar have acquired membership yet). The first was a hunt for pirates; too long a mission for our short stay-over. The second was a simple yet urgent mission to get the local baker some much needed sugar. The third was a challenge of sorts, an open invitation to all adventurers to seek out something called a ‘trickhouse’. We decided the baker’s task was the most appropriate, and we accepted said quest.
Before we went on adventure, however, I endeavoured to go to the Grand Oak Library, accompanied by Valstrax. Duldar seemed to have a more keen interest in the local smithy, so we went our separate ways. As I arrived at the library, I did not expect much in the way of purchases, but I still kept hope. Upon addressing the librarian, a woman by the name of Nessyl, I found a few books on sale. With my keen eye and Valstrax’s skills of persuasion, I managed to add three new books to my personal collection ( one of which was severely underpriced, to my benefit). So hello new knowledge, goodbye boredom. On our way out and towards the baker, we met Duldar, who seemed to not have as much success in his exploits as I had.
The bakery, Knead to know, looked like a normal bakery as any other. When we addressed the baker, called Ihelnus, we discovered some trouble behind the counter, however. It seemed some a bunch of sugar had not been collected, but was needed urgently for some feast. We gladly took the job and, after inquiring after our reward, we hired a cart from our caravan and rode to Small Paws farm.
At the farm, we discovered the owners to still be at work. When we found them in the fields, they required our help farming the sugar beets. Eager to show our work, we went in full force. Our work started slow, with particularly Valstrax having a bit of trouble with pulling the beets out. After hours of work and sore hands, we completed our task, and made some new friends in the owner of the farm and his family, and even received a silver piece each for our hard work. We delivered the beets with expedience and collected our reward of ten gold pieces.
Now, Brynn had been rather quiet during the entire day. Upon questioning him further, he admitted to suspecting his family to have been the bards coming through this small town earlier. He felt compelled to follow them, try to find them, and after a heartfelt goodbye, we watched our friend leave our company. I hope he will find what he is looking for.
At the moment of writing, I’m in the library once again. Duldar and I are researching aerodynamics a bit, inspired as we were by the flying creature we fought and of which we had bisected the wings. I’m afraid I’ll have to keep this report as short as possible, as I am eager to dig into the books. Who knows what we will find on our journeys in the future? I can’t wait to find out.
