Session 10: Setting Sail Report

General Summary

The start of the session found the Menagerie standing before the thankful villagers of Donborough, accepting accolades for ridding the town of a great, centuries-old evil. Osrick Riverhands pulled Droknar aside to ask questions about his magical abilities, while the party was approached by Nangan the apothecary. Nangan provided the Menagerie with more context on Shoku and the ratlings they had encountered in Timberwall, as well as more insight into their society. He advised the party against using the Sending Stones to contact Shoku, unless they were certain it was the correct course of action.   Following the meeting, the Menagerie made their way to the harbor where they encountered the bronze dragonborn Sabym Banil, the captain of the Triton's Lance. She proceeded to introduce the party to the rest of the crew and went over the rules for traveling on her ship. She gave the party a few hours to get their affairs in order before the ship was to set sail.   Skreech and Rinrin collected their studded leather from Xara Lotore and spent some time in the marketplace, where Rinrin contracted the hobgoblin tailor Noki to prepare for her some Shiftweave Clothing. Droknar bought some ammunition from Rigak and visited Nangan to pick up a few healing potions, while Dacha obtained a set of bedrolls from Sheriff Morro.   Dacha took some time to speak with one of the mercenaries who had been travelling with Beradin Glimdrak, an elf named Uridan. The elf mentioned that the mercenaries had brought all their supplies from Donborough, except for their water, which they filled from local water sources around Dacha's home village. Both of them guessed that Beradin didn't fall ill because of his dwarven heritage. As the elf ended the conversation with a warning about traveling on the high seas, Dacha made a point to visit the Temple of the Wavemother to speak with Nasse before they departed. There he found Nasse wearing the Diadem of Thar Ashaela as she attempted to commune with her deity and decided to sit down and practice the rites with her. Awaking from her trance, the priestess wished Dacha safe travels but warned him that, since they had left Timberwall, she had been encountering a malevolent presence whenever she communed with the Wavemother.   Their business in Donborough accomplished, the Menagerie returned to the Triton's Lance. Nightwind, the Corvidkin merchant who had taken a liking to Dacha, was there; she had reconsidered her plans and decided to return to Mekkisir, a decision at least partially influenced by meeting Dacha. During the first afternoon on the ocean, the party got to know the crew of the Triton's Lance a bit better. Droknar approached the ship's Bosun, a dwarf named Hunson Marblearm, following up on a comment from the captain about how he could drink her under the table. Their conversation led to the crew declaring a drinking contest between all of the Menagerie except Dacha. It seemed to be a close contest between Droknar, Rinrin, Hunson, and the ship's surgeon, Arlin, until a slight slip-up from Rinrin revealed she had been using magic to sneak her drinks, leaving the ship's surgeon the winner.   That evening, Skreech was visited again by the goddess Mekhane; this time, she seemed pleased with him. She congratulated him for using his gifts to bring another follower into her flock and when he awoke, he found for the first time since he'd started having visions of her, his affliction had not progressed.   On the second day, the Menagerie noticed a pirate ship in the distance and alerted the captain. She decided to steer their vessel closer to land, both to avoid the Pale Corsairs as well as visit a restaurant known as the Scuttled Hut. There the party enjoyed some of the better food they'd had in several weeks, and also encountered Silvie, the missing member of the group of Quilport Journeymen who the party had encountered in Timberwall. Rinrin managed to trick Silvie into approaching their table, at which point Droknar and Dacha pulled the woman outside to interrogate her. She revealed that she was planning to head to Mekkisir to report to Deleth Yorkiras, the leader of the Company, who was in the city for negotiations with their leader. Droknar convinced Silvie to go into hiding, with Dacha providing the woman the location of his village where she could hide out.   The lunch is cut short by a message from the ship; as the crew returns they find a Pale Corsairs ship fast approaching their vessel. The Menagerie man the battle stations as the Triton's Lance raised her sails to speed away. The two ships exchanged fire, with a well-placed shot from Skreech and his golem compatriots dealing severe enough damage to the corsair vessel that the pirates were forced to retreat. In the evening, Dacha approached Noki and asked the hobgoblin if he could stitch together the two bedrolls to make a single, large bedroll, which the hobgoblin agreed to do.   The following day saw storms approaching from the south, so the ship diverted toward an area where several rocky outcroppings rose from the waters. The ship was soon attacked by harpies but between the Menagerie and the crew, the matriarch of the harpies was slain and the surviving monsters fled for their lives, leaving the Menagerie to continue their journey to Mekkisir.
