Session 5: The Last Light Report

General Summary

Along the route, the party is ambushed by some assailants. Deiter and Dio charge forward, while Tristifer flanks. The rest of the party hunkers down in and around the cart. They fight some strange, brightly dressed enemies wielding poor quality spears. Barbozar cleaves a man's arm off. Cinder wounds a man with a well placed shot. Tristifer blocks a shot aimed toward him. Cinder is hit by a stray arrow. Dieter destroys a man's face with the Eshara of Corgastor. Dio slaughters another man. Tristifer charges an archer deep in the forest, and only gets a grazing hit. He then manages to dodge aside an ambush behind him. Barbozar follows up and cleaves into the ambusher. Meliyeus roasts a man alive with a beam of fire using the power of Vojûn. Meliyeus and Cinder, who are near the cart, are both flanked. Cinder wounds one of them, who continues to move forward. Dio leaps out of the way of an arrow, then hits Dieter for some minor damage. He is then hit by another from a different direction. Barbozar is hit with an arrow as well, as the ambush seems to devolve against the Keepers of the Lornesse.

The fighting continues. Dio charges into the brush and smashes the chest of an ambusher. Dieter binds one of the ambushers ahead of Tristifer. The Inquisitor then executes the man, given how poorly the fight had been going. Meliyeus is attacked by an ambusher, but manages to slip aside. Cinder dodges aside an attack as well, then hurls a knife into the eye of his attacker. Barbozar brings his elbow into the face of the man he was bound with, and destroys his continence. Meliyeus is attacked again, and rolls aside on the ground. Cinder is hit again for some minor damage. Marcarius binds a fleeing ambusher and Tristifer moves over and "secures" him. Cinder plunges his knife into the neck of the final combatant ambusher. Tristifer drags the captive toward the cart.

Tristifer attempts to question the man, but he attempts to dart. Barbozar restrains him. Dio comes down and forcibly interrogates the man. He gets some information, but nothing too much. In the fury, Barbozar breaks his jaw in an attempt to finish the man. Tristifer orders the man to be executed, then put back in the cart. They then depart.

The ambush was the only encounter of the week long journey.

The party is assailed by restless nights. Entirely dreamless sleep. Meliyeus has a dream, or a feeling that he is approaching death. Barbozar has a dream about a dark room, larger than he can see the edges. In the center is a pool of light, and in the center is a white throne. It is massive. At the back of the throne is blood stains. There is a feeling of empty abandonment. Tristifer and Dieter have a similar dream, nothingness, followed by a feeling of something in the area. Bright red eyes appear, bright and painful. They are like furnaces channeled through crystals. However, they feel cold. Things become colder. It creeps through their bones, limbs, and into the chest.

Everybody wakes up at the same time.

Dieter attempts to commune with Corgastor, but receives no vision.

They arrive at last light. It is a small town, known for its proximity to the Fringe. Most of the buildings are wood, with some stone towers around the perimeter. Finally, there is the last light. It is a massive tower, with the top of the tower bearing a hand, the symbol of Corgastor. The bonfire there is lit, but lower than the party might have hoped.

The town seems a bit calmer than Gottholm or the surrounding area.

Commander Malyna of the Keepers of the Last Light, who are an elite formation of troops who are tasked to maintain the Last Light and keep it safe. The Weeping Forst, which is a ship, was one of the few surviving vessels. The name is a reference to a battle of the past, a bloody affair with numerous ships. Most of the sailors are in an inn called the Wandering Women. She tells Tristifer that such a risky voyage might cost the extraordinary sum of 5,000 to 10,000 guilders to organize. They move up the stairs to the storage area, and get into a heated debate with the warden there, and are told to leave. They leave in an angry fuss.

Cinder goes to the local chapter of the Order of Nelsor. The clerk is the only one left in the office. Cinder orders the clerk to copy the maps he found and be ready.

The party meets up again, and Barbozar is drunk. That's a complication. Barbozar expresses his fear of the water, and the water goddess within. It's an ancient Karthuulite legend.

The party divides up into groups. Dieter and Tristifer move out to the wharf to gather information. The rest move on to the various inns to gather up perspective sailors.

Garrick shows up at the Wandering Woman inn and playfully takes Meliyeus's coin purse. He guides Meliyeus to the fireplace and begins to speak loudly of their friendship and what not. They speak about how they got out to this far part of Everos. Meliyeus tells them that Dieter and Tristifer are going to the wharf to inquire about ships. Once they are done talking, Garrick says he'll be moving on to "his" ship, the Wailing Water.

Cinder speaks with some sailors of the "less reputable sort" within the inn. He offers them whatever ship they use in exchange for passage, which is met with flabbergasted disbelief. The lead man asks what in hell they planned to do for a deal like that one. Cinder responded that they might be heading to the Fringe. The men agree to a possible deal.

Tristifer speaks with the owner of the vessel, and has a witty conversation about the nature of the purchase and why he needs it. Tristier pays 100 gold up front, 200 noted inquest, and 50 gold if they ever return.

Deiter completely fails at dock work.

Party reunites beneath the Tower of Last Light. Tristifer tells them all about the new boat they purchased, fair and legally. The other group tells them about Garrick and the "pirates" they hired.

Tristifer returns to the fisherman, and leans in close. "If anybody asks, though I hope they don't, the Inquisition was never in Last Light. Keep the 200 guilders."

They come aboard the ship, in which Garrick has held the captain prisoner. The 35 pirates that Cinder hired got to work immediately. The captain was taken and put into a cell, but it was well furnished and kept safe. In that case the fury would be a tad less once this all ended.
