Session 1: Introduction and Into the North
General Summary
Session 01 notes
The characters all found themselves in the City of Luskan. All arrived by differing means but all with the same goal of finding adventure, treasure, and glory. They all soon became fast friends meeting in the tap room of the tavern/inn they were boarding at, The Cutlass. A rough around the edges tavern close to the docks and infamous ‘Ratway’.
Time passed and coin dwindled until each of the player characters found that their pouches just held a handful of silvers left when they saw the missive the tavern keep was tacking on the wall:
“Wanted: A group of skilled men-at-arms to accompany a merchant into grand adventure in the city Targos in exotic Icewind Dale. Pay will be commensurate with skill. Please see Master Peddywinkle, merchant to the Realms, currently staying in the Royal Arms outside the Winter Palace. Employment in Targos after the trip is also offered. Hurry! The adventure awaits!”
After a short discussion and reflection of the lack of other opportunities in front of the characters they decided to seek out this Master Peddywinkle to find out the nature of his proposal. After a walk to the better part of the city and entry into the Royal Arms Inn, the party met with Peddywinkle the merchant, who had them go through a short introduction and interview of claimed skills and experience.
After a short bit of haggling with the party’s bard and fast talker it was agreed to that the party would accompany this caravan north from Luskan, through the Spine of the World to the city of Targos one of the ‘Ten Towns’ located in the cold be fabled region of Icewind Dale.
Later that day the characters assembled in the back of the Inn where the wagons were being hitched and the two teamsters were met, Rafferty Tannerson and his nephew Dell. From there party headed off on its journey north through the well-travelled trade route called ‘The Northern Means’. Twelve days in lead the caravan through the last of the ‘southern lands’ and up through the mountain pass of The Spine of the World. On that night the party encountered what appeared to be a giant owl, but the party’s bard was able to scare it away with a magical charm he casted through his skillful whistling. The very next day, thirteen days in, while fishing at a nearby pond/watering hole, the party’s Monk Rien discovered a bone scroll case containing a scroll of clerical spells. Further investigation led the Ranger Willow to discover some tracks leading away and over a rise.
Rein, Willow, Valeria, and Aidous went back to the camp to gather supplied and light, in case they travelled after dark, and went up into the rising foothills after what appeared to be first drag marks but then wagon ruts. The party soon discovered a tipped over supply wagon and, after counting, 18 bodies, two of which being goblins. All the bodies and the wagon was stripped clean of all items and valuables. Through further searching Willow found that there was tracks for what appeared to be two additional wagons and about a half-dozen humanoid tracks leading away from this area and going off father into the wilderness, up over a rise and bend.
This is where the session ended.
