Session #74: Conversations in Giantish

General Summary

From the journal of Illarion Melnikov   We (Ouritzo, Sir Rob, Nuwl, Neil, Frush, and myself) went back into the Rift to further uncover the operations of the Frost Giants. As we approached, we saw one of the two dragons fly out and away from the Rift. Unfortunately, Sir Rob did not see, so thusly continues his bizarre notion that dragons do not exist. We descended, following empty tunnels and passing through emptied cavernous rooms where we had done battle in previous weeks, then beheld a tunnel leading down into the deeper levels of this icy abode. We passed it by to investigate other rooms in the southwest corner of the giants' home.

  • Room 23 - Nuwl swiftly dispatched several frost giants with nary a sound as they were all sleeping. They had little of note, so we moved on.
  • Room 26 - Nuwl advanced, then advised us to enter and attack when he screamed. He dispatched one fire giant, to our surprise, then Frush, now Enlarged to nearly twice his size, tore through a second. The third scrambled into a corner and his behind his bed after trying to talk to us. So I approached and offered him an opportunity to surrender in Giant. He did, then allowed me to Reduce him. Now much smaller, we learned several pieces of information from him (see notes) before I turned him into a crow and let him try to find a new life. A simpler one, I'm sure.
  • Room 24 - We nearly passed this room by, but Frush spied hill giants, including one with a spear he recognized from the Hill Giant's Steading. We walked in and I had the first combat casting of Confounding Architecture, which worked quite well. Nuwl and Ouritzo also hurled in some Necrotic Spheres and we brought the fight to an end in mere minutes. Hill giants stink, so we did not linger.
  • Room 25 - We approached and saw several stone giants, who did not immediately attack, but were cautious. I approached and addressed them. They were willing to converse, but we learned little from them.
  • A marking on the map in Giant denotes a danger in the northern portion of Room 21. We might consider investigating, but passed it by as we were running out of energy to cast spells.
  • Jarl Grungir is the leader of the Frost Giants in this Rift. Nyx's former friend Ax must've not been the brightest star in the night sky. According to the Fire Giant ambassador we interrogated, they were here to see that Grungir's fealty to King Snurre was upheld, as was their bargain. King Snurre has been promised the Yeomancy as his spoils of this war.
  • Jarl Grungir has some power over or agreement with two white dragons. They lair within the bowels of the Rift and are typically closed in behind a great boulder. I suspect they fly in and out through a different path.
  • There is a secret entrance into the court of Jarl Grungir, but we don't know where it is yet. Worth investigating. He also keeps a guard of 5 frost giants with him, at least in his court.
  • The Stone Giants of the Crystalmists pay homage to the Jarl simply for the sake of peace amongst Giant-kin. They seem to not be interested in participating in the war, but don't stand against it, either.
  • King Snurre is the King of the Fire Giants in the Hellfurnaces.
  • Eclavdra is verified to be a drow, or at least not a giant.
