Session 56: White Plume Mountain Report

General Summary

The party, still tense, takes the other fork in the path. They come to a door, and Virion peeks inside

Selina punched the creature twice, blasting it with lightning and acid damage. The creature is stunned. Between the creature being stunned and Virion being incapacitated by madness, he flees and begins to cry. Bubbles then runs up and attacks the creature. The blade cuts through its transluscent flesh and it bleeds miscolored blood. They do this twice more, and the entitty.

The dwarves then attack. One stabs Bubbles with a mind-poisoned dagger and pulls on their mind, but they resist. They resist another one, and it pulnges its dagger into the creature, and the psychic damage is reflected onto others.

Mystan casts Flame Strike, making a verticle column of fire to annihilate the duergar and the creature. When it fades, the duergar are but ash and the creature is annihilated.

The party debates what to do about Virion, who is crying. Selina doesn't want to comfort him, and after a minute Mystan casts Lesser Restoration. Bubbles opens the door. They come to a copper turnstile. With Bubbles' sword, they easily burn through it. Once they get to the geyser area, they discuss what to do. While Selina could fly, the others cannot--but Mystan summons a pair of giant eagles with the charm of animal conjuring! Two giant eagles show up and ferry them across. They open the door, and Mystan takes the lead upon seeing a skeleton.

The group approaches, and the skeleton does nothing. It can be moved easily. The bones look old, and Seklyn asks if it has life. Mystan makes a medicine check, and notices that it has large canines, otherwise it has nothing notable. No injuries.

Mystan opens the door and lights his hammer. A bulbous flippered duergar is in the center of the room, with six of the spindly creatures from the Emperor of the Waves on it! Virion immedaitely upcasts Fireball. Selina then runs in and punches all of the remaining grue, circling behind the strange monster. The creature turns to whack Selina with its staff, incapacitating her. It silently glides through Seklyn and attacks Mystan with a ranged attack, but the orb of mental damage slides off his wings.

Bubbles rushes in and disarms the creature. It doesn't fall prone, but Bubbles still slices it thrice and bloodying the creature. The creature is terribly hurt, and Mystan moves in with Duskcrusher and critically fails, accidentatly turning duskcrusher off and plunging the room back into magical darkness. He swears and,with a Channel Divinity, and turns it back on and smashing into the creature! With a bonus action, he attacks again! But misses.

Virion activiates Bladesong and casts Lightning Lure. The enemy fails, and is pulled towards Virion. While flanking, he attacks with his Sunblade, missing. Selina walks over and kicks the staff towards the fire. He then slumps against a wall. The creature tries to use Collapse Distance to move Bubbles around, but it fails. Opportunity attacks then kill it.

This strange creature wore a pendant with the sigil of Clan Rolsar. They put the coffin's fire out, but find beneath it ten thousand gold pieces worth of coins, a potion, and a trio of spell scrolls. Additionally, there is Whelm. But why are there members of Clan Rolsar? What were they doing with Whelm? Where is the Brotherhood of Keraptis. They return on the Eagles to the other side and head to the intersection.

The creepy star staff goes in the mud. They head to the room with the strange corpse to rest, using the corpse and ruined turnpike to fortify the door.

Selina meditates a bit during the short rest, but then approaches Virion and apologizes about the deal with the ring. She says that he was probably right, that the ring might've corrupted her. VIrion in turn apologizes for being childish. They discuss the Wish. Seklyn asks what Virion would've wished for. He says "I guess the same thing I want from the wish if we return Whelm here-"

"When, we return it."

"Yes. The Raanites want it. When we return it they will grant a wish within their power."

"And what do you want?"

"A new life, somewhere. With their backing and the ship ride from anywhere, I could have a new life without having to worry about being scried upon. Not to mention, with some of the spells in here-" he touches his spellbook, "-all I'd need is a year just to get started."

"You want to run from this?"

"Not from this, but-"

"Well, not here, but from your friends? Form everyone you know?"

"What friends?"

"I thought we were friends."

"Sorry, I meant no slight. The point is, just, not here."

"If you do end up running, I wouldn't blame you. I know it isn't what you want, but... you can run with us. We will protect you. Aryz will protect you. Only if you want, of course."

"Thank you, I am still envisioning options."

And then, black pudding outside the door!!!
