The Fractured Shield

A Dungeons & Dragons 5e game In the world of Domains of Dread
January 2021 | Full
Four strangers each individually taken by the Mists find themselves in a strange and dangerous land. Why were they brought here and why were the four of them taken at the same time? Is something guiding their movements? Is it Divine fate that propels them forward or something more sinister?   Welcome to The Fractured Shield, a campaign set in the Misty Realms of Ravenloft where nothing is ever what it seems with shadows and horrors hidden in the most unlikely of places. The denizens of Ravenloft do what they can to survive under the often harsh rule of the Darklord that rules over their land. Some our heroes, trying to make a difference against the darkness. Others are villains, trying to scrape up their own bits of power. Most, however, are day-to-day citizens just living their lives and keeping their heads down. After all, can the darkness really hurt you if you can't see it?

Supporting Cast
  • Bouki
Bouki is medium sized rabbit with coarse dark brown fur, black beady eyes, and instead of the standard rabbit teeth, his are sharp and pointed like that of a wolf. He is very excitable and not particularly smart. Bouki thoroughly enjoys conversing with humanoids and wants nothing more than to make new friends.
  • Bushtail
Bushtail is a medium sized red fox. He can employ illusionary magic while he plays the lute to tell stories. He enjoys hearing tales from travelers and, though he is not overly fond of humanoids, he will converse politely with them. He dislikes rude behavior and is overly protective and fond of Bouki.
  • Ezmerelda d'Avenir
Ezmerelda is a hunter and friend of Warden Ozrek. She dedicates herself to hunter monsters and saving people from the Darkness within the Domains of Dread as she does all she can to continue van Ritchen's legacy.
  • Hermos
One of the Carnival’s oldest performers, Hermos the Half-Giant, handles the Carnival’s day-to-day operations. Hermos is a mountain of muscle half again as tall as most human adults. His deliberate manner and coolheaded demeanor earn him the respect of the Carnival’s troupers.
  • Longears
Longears is a medium sized rabbit with coarse ruddy brown fur, black beady eyes, and razor sharp teeth. Longears is highly intelligent and dislakes humanoids whom he refers to with disgust as "two-leggers".
  • Madam Fortuna
Madam Fortuna typically dresses in a dark red gown and black cowl lined with fine golden thread. She looks to be in her 80s, perhaps older, perhaps younger. It is impossible to tell. Her eyes are pitch black speckled with white dots of light reminiscent of a starry, midnight sky.
  • Professor Pacali
Professor Pacali dresses in the long, dark robes of a scholar. He wears half-moon spectacles perched upon his long, sharp nose and his grisly gray hair is swept back from his broad forehead. He is a bit haughty and thinks himself above the Carnival’s actions but would rather be hiding here than back in Darkon where his experiments were frowned upon by his fellow professors at the University of Brautslava. It is rumored that Azalin Rex was particularly displeased by an experiment of Pacali’s. What that experiment entailed is unknown.
  • Quantarius
Wizard with a no nonsense attitude and very knowledgeable about the realms within the Mists. Encountered at the Carnival and mostly referred to as the "wondering wizard", Quantarius's goals and origins are unknown.
  • Sempronia Sornatis
The party met Sempronia in the swamps of Souragne. She says she's a scholar from the Domain of Darkon surveying the Domains contained within the Mists. She is quite knowledgeable, yet so far has not been overly forthcoming with her knowledge.
  • The Blade Brothers
The Blade Brothers are part of the Skurra Vistani. Everything about them, from their clothing (black vests open to bear chest and black and white striped pantaloons) to their skull face paint is identical. During their act they juggle numerous blades of all shapes and sizes between them, sometimes with a volunteer from the audience standing in-between their deadly blades.
  • The Fates Three
Silent members of the Carnival, the Fates Three are often seen mimicking patrons who are being rude to other Carnival performers.
  • Tindal
Tindal is tall, wiry man that sports a top hat, a high collared cape that sweeps to the ground, and pin striped best and trousers. He is a Barker at the Carnival who maintains the House of Mirrors and offers wealthier customers private tours of the Carnival. Tindal is a showman. He tends to exaggerate and dramatize the shows on display, making stories up or keeping them as close to the true stories as he can, whichever causes the most amount of awe and terror from his audience. Tindal has been at the Carnival for many years now and is intimately familiar with the performers, though Tindal is mostly out for himself.
