Session 8: Terminus Station (Pt. IV) Report

General Summary

The first thing that happens is Gal comes back into contact.    The rest of the party have drifted through the nearly immaculate bullpen, skirting the modrons and chatting with the blink dog, when they drift right into where Gal has recently joined the myconid network in an adjacent room. Unfortunately for Gal, Kriskain is busy being Still Mad at Val and Lòmion; Val is busy messing up the nicely organised room and being death-glared at by modrons; Mica is busy casting Comprehend Languages, and Lòmion is busy trying not to become friends with the nice blink dog. Fortunately, Gal is armed with a succulent, an entire filing cabinet's worth of files, and a very tiny myconid sprout, and manages to pretty quickly find their way into the bullpen, pulling Kriskain (temporarily) out of her irritation and drawing Lòmion's attention.    Lòmion finds that Gal's pile of files consist of security case files, and promptly searches them for friends while Gal shows Kriskain their new plant baby. Lòmion recognises a couple of names, the most notable being Lee Alistair, who was involved in an altercation involving the right hand of a high-ranking tiefling general and a suspected tiefling spy; they caused quite a bit of damage. He shows the file to Val, who is very interested indeed, and stores it in her pack.    Meanwhile, Mica finds out from a semi-cooperative duodrone that the rooms are numbered, and that financial records are stored in room 47; after she pushes it a little, it shows her to a small kitchenette, containing a numbered map of the floor. Lòmion immediately takes charge and starts barrelling through rooms to reach room 47. The rest of the party follow at a more exploratory pace. In the break room, Kriskain finds a magical battery in a run-down refrigerator; at Mica's behest, she pulls it out and gives it to Mica.     In the corridor beyond the break room, Kriskain and Val stumble headfirst into a patch of violet fungus while Lòmion and Gal gawp at a grell further down the corridor. Determining that the party cannot, in fact, fight a grell in single file, Lòmion drags everyone down a side passage and emerges near a transporter pad; beyond the transporter pad, the party find the electrical room and reset all the tripped breakers. This is a bad idea. They recognise this is a bad idea almost immediately, when the floor erupts in monstrous roars, and turn all the lights off again.    When Val can't break into the next room, everyone backtracks to take a different route to room 47. As they do so, they pass a portculis looking into room 44, a horrible, nasty little room filled with hazards and corpses. Room 44 appears to be ground zero for the basement infestation, and is also proof that biosecurity is a thing for a reason. The party wisely pass right on by and head to room 47.    Despite many, many warnings by the myconid sprouts, the blink dog, and the DM themself, the party decide the best course of action is to have Kriskain kick the door down. Val, seeing nothing dangerous, strides right on into the darkmantle nest and is immediately engulfed by a darkmantle.    Kriskain rushes in and is also quickly engulfed by a darkmantle; when Lòmion casts a light onto the creatures, the party finds themselves in the deeply uncomfortable position of experiencing true darkness for the first time, despite their dark vision, as they're swamped in a magical darkness. Before this, Lòmion works out that the creatures use blindsight and echolocation; Magical Girl Mica casts a very nasty thunderwave and deafens about half of them, so everyone involved in the fight is rolling with disadvantage. Gal rushes through the darkness and finds that it has a limited range; unfortunately, when they try to make an attack, they accidentally slice the rope harness holding their succulent. They fall to their knees in the darkness to find it, and are immediately glomped by another darkmantle.    Kriskain manages to kill her darkmantle by headbutting it the fuck off her face and into the wall; Mica casts many a Fireball as the party gets slowly bludgeoned. Gal casts their breath weapon and takes a chunk of damage out of three creatures at once. Meanwhile, Lòmion, showing an uncharacteristic amount of concern for the wellbeing of another person, casts a very vengeful Witch Bolt at the darkmantle on Val, who is already unconscious. Unfortunately, he's so consumed by getting vengeance, he misses the opportunity to save Val, who slips into death while still telepathically connected to the entire party.    Everyone goes kind of nuts.    Mica casts Melf's Acid Arrow with chilling precision and none of her usual cheer, disintegrating one darkmantle. Lòmion continues Witch Bolting the shit out of one darkmantle at a time, infecting everyone else with his anger; Kriskain loses her temper and uses her weapon, blinded with anger and only hitting half the time, but twice as hard. Gal lands a critical hit with their axe on one darkmantle, and nearly hits their poor succulent with the other. Mica finishes the survivors off with a series of Magic Missiles, and the party all gather to panic around Val.    The myconid sprouts finally manage to get through the emotional turmoil clouding the telepathic network and tell Mica that there's something containing necromancy magic in room 44. Lòmion, upon hearing this, scoops Val's body up and carries it back to the transporter room, where it can be safe and surrounded by myconid sprouts until he finds a way to drag her spirit back into her body with his own two hands, if necessary.    First, though, everyone takes a short break. It's been a long day.
