Session 5: Into the Repository Report

General Summary

At the ruined abbey of Oberdorf, the party has breakfast, discussing what to do next to find more information on the mysterious valley they ended up in on their previous adventure. They decide to look for the abbey's library. Exploring the abbey's central quad, they visit the chapterhouse with its magnificent mosaic map of the Abbey Lordship on the floor, as well as the Great Hall of the Abbey's central building, which contains a sculpture of St. Valus with a huge floating halo above the saint's head which Odalys, much to the irritation of Gamrumm and Cyrano, attempts to get to and steal (he also attempted to steal stones from the chapterhouse floor). Next, the party finds they way down into the abbey ossuary, adorned with the bones of generations of monks in macabre art depicting the constellations associated with the Twelve Fatherly Precepts. Although there is a portcullis barring entry from the Great Hall, the party finds its way in through the abbey grounds, seeking entry, but finds the doors barred.   When Gamrumm picks up one of the bones, he unwittingly disturbs the spirit of one of the Jurors of Saint Valus and questions him on the existence of a library within the Abbey. The ghostly monk tells Gamrumm about the repository, which is accessed via the Scriptorium, but when he is questioned further he irritably exclaims that he is just the abbey's gardener and does not know any more. When the rest of the party has already left, Cyrano not-so-unwittingly disturbs the cranky ghost again.   The party enters the scriptorium, which has a magnificent stained glass roof depicting the Platinum Dragon form of St. Valus and four stained glass windows depicting four coloured dragons on backgrounds associated with the seasons. As Ela and Gamrumm borrow a few books, Odalys and Cyrano quickly solve the puzzle by aligning four books on stands with the windows, revealing the way into the repository.   Making their way into the worn repository beneath the abbey, the party encounters and fights a gelatinous cube, a flock of annoying mephits, an ultimately friendly murder of kenku and a mimic. In the central chamber of the repository, they face off with the Repository's librarian, who turns out to be a crazy spectator, and finish him off in short order. When they explore the collection of books and magic items (which they claim as prizes), they find a book on the foundation of the Abbey stating its connection to a place known as the Vallis in Absconditum (de vallei der verborgenheid), which the Abbey was founded to protect.   Combing out the rest of the dungeon, the party happens upon drow raiders making their way through a hole in the wall, before heading up again.
