Child of Possession

During your conception, one of your parents was possessed by a powerful elemental or extraplanar spirit, be it through a ritual or as part of a pact that was likely never fulfilled, and a large portion of its power was left in your soul. Your appearance hints at the elemental power that has been permanently implanted within your very essence. If you were made aware of this, it may have influenced the treatment of you from other's or how you viewed yourself and the world around you.

Skill Proficiencies Arcana, Nature
Languages Primordial
Equipment A set of traveler's clothes, 5gp, one trinket from the Elemental Trinkets table, given to you by your elemental parent.

Features

Elemental Empowerment

You gain the power to use the Firebolt cantrip once, and use is replenished after a short or long rest. All cantrips, spells, and features that effect a target's hit points in any way are altered to deal damage of the damage type infused into your essence as below:
  • Earth: Acid damage
  • Water: Cold damage
  • Fire: Fire damage
  • Wind: Lightning damage
If you select this background, you cannot learn or cast spells that restore hit points.
Imbued Essence
Having been born of a particular element, you do not take damage from elemental effects belonging to your chosen type if the damage is 10 or less.

Extraplanar Feature

Due to the large portion of your essence that is elemental, one of your physical features changes and the elemental heritage you have shows through in subtle ways. These do not change the way your body functions. Choose two of the three listed traits from your elemental background on the table below:
  Earth:
  • Your frame is unusually broad and heavyset for your race.
  • Your skin is visibly thicker and feels gritty to the touch.
  • The ground tremors gently when you prepare spells.
  Water
  • Your features are abnormally soft and flow together and make you appear more androgynous.
  • Your eyes are colored with deep blues and greens, shifting like an undersea tide.
  • When preparing spells, the temperature around you drops dramatically and a light frost appears on the terrain and objects around you.
  Fire
  • Your hair is bright red, and subtly mimics the flow and glow of burning fire when you move.
  • Your eyes are intensely black, but constantly reflect a shifting red hue that echoes a burning fire on coals.
  • When you prepare spells, sparks fly outward from your body.
    Wind
  • Your features are much sharper than is normal for your race.
  • Your hair shifts with your mood from white to dark grey colors, flowing or bouncing like clouds in the sky.
  • When preparing spells, the air around you cracks with static electricity bouncing in the space around your body.

Suggested Characteristics

Many children of possession are raised fully aware of the circumstances of their birth, and it tends to shape much of their perspective and behaviors. Some of these children were born of pacts, and have their own thoughts on the matter, while others were born only due to the agreement of a curious elemental. These children can often struggle with feeling more valuable, powerful, or alienated from others and set out to the world for a variety of reasons.
