Vampires of the Line of the Wolf originated as the result of underground experimentation which would allow for the transfer of magical ability from one entity to another. These experiments failed, and created creatures who drew strength and power by draining magical energy from others. The patriarchs of the Line of the Wolf were three non-magical human children. When the three failed the experiments, a fourth non-magical human child was added, who also failed. At this point, the four children bonded, and were able to use their powers to drain the energy of their captors and escape into the world, forming the first ever Wolf Pack.
As with regular vampires (vampires of the Line of the Bat), vampires of the Line of the Wolf have supernaturally heightened abilities and feed off of the life force of unsuspecting people. However, they are notably different in several ways.
First, when Wolves feed off of people, it will only hurt the person if they are also non-magical. A person who has some magical energy will only be partially damaged. A person who is a full caster will suffer no damage.
Secondly, vampires of the Line of the Wolf are never lawful and almost always chaotic.
Furthermore, though most vampires of the Line of the Bat are solitary, Wolves always have a Pack. These packs are nomadic and led by whoever among them has the most magical power. In the event that a Wolf Pack has no magical members, the member with the highest Wis score will lead. Wolf Packs share all they have and foster a fierce loyalty for fellow members. Perhaps the most notable aspect of a Wolf Pack is that it is hardly ever a vampire-exclusive organization. People from all walks of life can be welcomed into a Pack if they have proven themselves to be a worthy ally. However, all-vampire Packs, though rare, are far more dangerous than a mixed group. Without a non-vampire to ground them, these packs quickly swing toward Chaotic Impure, instead of the default, which is Chaotic Neutral.
There is no such thing as a Lone Wolf Vampire who is alone by choice. When a Line of the Wolf vampire is separated from their Pack, they will stop at nothing to reunite with their lost family. A Lone Wolf separated from their Pack is quite possibly the most dangerous kind of vampire that exists. If a Wolf’s Pack has been killed, it is likely that the Lone Wolf will attempt to join them in death, unless they quickly find a new group of friends to form into a new Pack.
The final difference is that vampires of the Line of the Wolf gain access to the spells Detect Evil and Good, Detect Magic, and Calm Emotions, and cast them all ritually. Otherwise, they have no magical ability.
