Glaciate

9-level Transmutation

Casting Time 1 action
Range 120 feet
Duration Instantaneous
Components S
Materials A Snowflake preserved in crystal

A spray of liquid ice springs from your outstretched hand onto a target you can see within range. The target can be a creature or an object not made of ice.

A creature targeted by this spell must make a Dexterity saving throw. On a failed save, the target takes 10d8 + 60 cold damage and suffers one level of exhaustion. If this damage reduces the target to 0 hit points, it is frozen into solid ice.

If the spell is used to target an object smaller than 60 feet on a side, the object turns to solid ice. If the object is larger than that, this spell turns a 60 foot cube of it into ice. Each 10 ft portion of ice has 12 AC and 30 hit points as well as vulnerability to fire damage. Magic items are unaffected by this spell. Any creature that ends their turn within 10 feet of an object turned to ice in this way takes 3d8 cold damage.

Alternatively, this spell can be used to flashfreeze a wide expanse of still or slowly flowing water. The most common use is to freeze up to a 10- mile long, 1-foot deep bridge of ice to traverse a lake or slow river. This spell can also freeze a 100-foot cube of water into solid ice. Creatures submerged in the water when it is frozen by this spell take 100 points of cold damage and are restrained until they thaw or break free.
