Wondrous Item
Very Rare
A singular piece of ancient metalwork, its form encapsulating the entirety of the wearer’s head with unbroken continuity. Measuring slightly larger than the average human skull, it exhibits a gently curved front that closely follows the contours of the face. From the crown downward, the helm gracefully tapers, adhering subtly to the natural structure of the wearer’s head. The metal, dense and compacted to remarkable thinness, is unusually heavy for its apparent delicacy. Its surface is notably devoid of visible seams or rivets. Upon inspection, the once-smooth exterior is extensively marred by countless dents, varying dramatically in size and depth. These indentations are irregular and random, some shallow and minor, others significantly deeper, giving the helm a subtly crumpled and battered appearance. Small fissures and stress fractures, webbing outward from several of the larger dents, can be seen throughout the metal’s surface. These markings create a sporadic pattern of intersecting lines, each impact seemingly layered atop the previous ones in an unpredictable mosaic of harm. Dominating the face of the helm are two intricately sculpted hands, rendered in exacting, unsettling realism. Their slender fingers, six on each hand and elongated slightly beyond natural proportions, interlace tightly across the front, directly covering the helm's eye region. The hands are positioned with an extraordinary attention to anatomical accuracy; each finger exhibits clearly defined joints, subtle knuckle ridges, and finely detailed nail beds that have retained their delicate, natural curvature despite many years of wear. The metal fingers overlap just enough to form narrow slits between them, allowing limited visibility while imparting a cage-like impression to the observer. The metal of these hands merges seamlessly with the helm, flowing organically into the broader surface without any visible points of attachment, creating a sense of fluidity in their formation. The joints where the fingers interlock reveal faint traces of abrasion, worn smoother than the surrounding areas, indicating repeated contact or friction at these junctures over an extensive duration. Minute deposits of dust, compacted into fine sediment, fill the smallest gaps between the fingers. At the back, the helm gradually narrows to a subtle point, integrating into an extended neck guard that fully encloses the throat. The rear guard flares gently outward at the base, shaped to comfortably accommodate the contours of the shoulders and neck without impeding movement. Despite the evident age and wear, the interior remains smoothly finished, lined by a thin layer of petrified textile fragments that cling faintly to the inner surface. This fragile lining, though degraded nearly to dust, retains evidence of tightly woven threads, now compressed and hardened into an almost stone-like consistency. The overall patina of the helm is characterized by a muted, dull dark-gray hue interspersed with darker, tarnished patches and faint metallic sheen barely visible in scattered spots less affected by damage. A thin, irregular layer of mineral deposits clings sporadically to the helm’s exterior. +4 AC when worn.
