Clutching Clay Fingers

2-level Transmutation

Casting Time: 1 action
Range/Area: 60 feet / 5-foot burst on the ground
Components: Material, Somatic, Verbal
Duration: 1 minute (Concentration)
Attack/Save: Strength save
Damage/Effect: Bludgeoning
Grasping fingers of earth and clay rise up in an area to snatch and grab at nearby creatures. Each creature in the area when you cast the spell, and each creature that ends it's turn in the area during the spell's duration, must attempt a Strength saving throw against your spell save DC.   On a failed save, the creature suffers 2d6 bludgeoning damage and is grabbed by the grasping clay fingers. On a success, the creature suffers half damage and is not grabbed. If the creature critically fails, it is restrained rather than grabbed.   For each round the spell is maintained, you can use your action to cause the clay fingers to constrict, causing 1d6 bludgeoing damage to grabbed creatures, or 2d6 bludgeoning damage to restrained creatures.   A creature can attempt to Escape, rolling against your spell save DC.
At higher levels: When you cast this spell, for every two spell slots above 2nd that you use to cast the spell, the area of the burst increases by 5 feet, (10-foot at 4th level, 15-foot at 6th level, and 20-foot at 8th level), and the damage increases by 1d6 to grabbed creatures and by 2d6 to restrained creatures accordingly.
