Eye of the Beholder

Wondrous Item

Rare Divination Requires Attunement

Requires Attunement by a creature with a Wisdom of 13 or higher.

Cannot be Unnattuned by a creature with less than 16 Charisma.

The Eye of the Beholder counts as one of the Vestiges of Vanity

This necklace cannot hold more than 5 charges at a time. The Necklace loses 1 charge every night at midnight, unless it only has 1 charge remaining. If the necklace ever has no charges remaining, it becomes a mundane item and loses all magical properties, permanently, and activates Penance of the Ugly. It cannot naturally regain charges without a host.

While attuned to The Eye of the Beholder, the wearer gains the following benefits:

Vain Appreciation: You have -1 to your Charisma Score (Minimum of 3). You have Proficiency in Perception and Insight checks. If you already have Proficiency, you gain Expertise.

The Price of Beauty: As a free action, once per turn, you may consume 1 Hit Dice, rolling it and suffering Necrotic damage equal to the result. The Eye of the Beholder regains 1 charge for every 5 Hit Points (or part thereof) lost as a result of The Price of Beauty.

The Beholder: As a bonus action on your turn, you may close your eyes and consume 1 charge to enter the Beholder state for 3 turns (The turn this feature was activated not inclusive). While in this state, you are immune to the surprised condition, have advantage on initiative rolls, and have advantage on dexterity saving throws.

Eye of Desitny (Must be in Beholder state): As a bonus action on your turn, you attempt to peer into the certain future of 1 creature within 30ft, consuming 1 charge. Make a DC14 Wisdom saving throw. On a successful save, you can accurately predict the actions of that creature, gaining the following benefits until the start of your nexty turn:
  • All attacks they make against you have disadvantage, and you have advantage on any saves made to avoid effects caused by that creature.
  • All attacks you make against them have advantage, and they have disadvantage on any saves made to avoid effects caused by you.
This feature has no effect on a failed save.

Cruel Riposte (Must be in Beholder state): As a rection to a creature within 30ft of you missing an attack against you, you may consume 1 charge to unleash overwhelming dread upon the attacker. They must make a DC14 Wisdom saving throw, or suffer 5d4 points of Psychic damage. If this damage reduces the creature to 0 Hit Points, they immediately die and are consumed by the Vesitge of Vanity. This feature has no effect on a successful save.

This small necklace, a simple work of bronze thorns overlapping a carefully concealed Tiger's Eye gemstone, radiates with latent divination magic. When active, the thorns receed and wrap themselves about the neck of the wearer, revealing the eye underneath, the illusion of a regular gemstone vanishing, as its arcane and animate nature manifests.
