Banana Greyfin Species in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Banana Greyfin

Banana Greyfins are small tropical fish widespread through the shimmering ocean. They are very common and are very well known.
These fish grow up to 40cm long, 4-5cm thick. Females tend to be much larger than males, almost double the size. They are a big shoal fish, swimming through the reefs in shoals of anywhere from 50 to 1000.

Basic Information

Anatomy

These fish are very tall, and they have a long thin dorsal and pelvic fin, almost in a boomerang shape. It is completely grey with a yellow stripe along its eye.
There is a distinct variation within the species, the fish can have very light grey scales, or very dark grey scales, almost verging on black. The more drastic shade/tint the fish has, the more valuable it is.

Genetics and Reproduction

During breeding season in Uribar-Lonribar, females will mate with just one male. They do mate for life. Females lay about 100 eggs in a small cave/hole in coral, or rock in the reef. They defend this nest with their lives. When the eggs hatch, the mother stays with the babies for 2 weeks until they grow into adults, then the, now adults, leave the nest forever.

Ecology and Habitats

Banana greyfins live in shoals anywhere from 50 to a thousand. They swim in open waters, brackish waters in estuaries and in tropical reefs. They frequent the tropical reefs off the east coast of Aekor, near Sanra Forest.

Dietary Needs and Habits

The fish feed on short seagrasses, and any tiny invertebrates or plankton they can find. They will clean coral by eating all the algae growing on it.

Behaviour

Banana Greyfins can be shockingly violent. During breeding season, both male and female fish will become extremely protective over their eggs. They will attack anything that gets close to their eggs, even floating seaweed or bits of coral and debris floating about. Unfortunately the fish are very weak, they deal minimum or no damage to predators. But their beserk nature can scare them off anyways.
