Asbothore Species in Yonderverse | World Anvil

Asbothore

Asbothores are immense cetaceans from the planet Hothiri in the Kurhira Solar System. These creatures are practically the only things you'll find in the barren parts of the ocean world.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Asbothores have a massive body, growing up to 40 metres long. Their skin is thick, a dark blue colour that reflects light, hiding from predators. Their heads are large, with a massive mouth that filter feeds plankton. The teeth form a giant wall within their mouths that block larger things from entering and being swallowed. Their eyes are incredibly large and bulbous to help them spot other asbothores in the deep dark. Their fins are massive and end in what look like feathers, that glow in the dark to mesmerise and stun predators as they swim about the oceans. Their tails also have these same shapes and glowings.

Genetics and Reproduction

Absothores mate during breeding season, where males find a mate by calling out for them. Since pods are always platonic, a male will temporarily leave their pod to go find a female from another pod. Once found, they will mate regardless if they like each other or not. Gestation period for females is about 13 months, or a single year on Hothiri.

Growth Rate & Stages

Asbothore calves will stay by their mothers for about 2 years before they will venture off to find a new pod. There is no chance you'll find a pod where two asbothores are related, as they always leave to go find a new pod. Asbothores become sexually mature at 10 years old.

Ecology and Habitats

These massive creatures live all over the planet of Hothiri, swimming around in massive pods through the lifeless oceans. Asbothores spend their entire lives just wandering about the oceans in search of oases, and when they do they usually get bored after a few days and leave again.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Asbothores are filter feeders, consuming masses of plankton found in the oceans. They are constantly feeding; if they don't, they cannot eat enough to sustain their body weight and they will end up dying.
