The Mouth of the Void

This article is by no means complete. Please come back once the update has been sent to Followers. You'll know that's happened when it has a cover image. Thanks!

The Mouth of the Void is a black hole that suddenly opened up in the middle of some of the most well-travelled Airts in Known Space. This disaster cost millions of lives, devastated the Avalonian Empire, and completely severed their connection to their homeworld of Avalon. This event also generated the Wildstar Wormhole, an unstable wormhole that wanders from system to system, with irregular time dilation.   The Mouth of the Void was generated when two large stars collided, forming a giant mass that rapid collapsed into a large black hole.

Manifestation

Like most black holes, the Mouth of the Void is a dark hole in space that eats even light. The effects of its gravitation are often felt long before anything else is noticed, causing rapids in the Airts, eventually coalescing into a whirlpool as one approaches its gravity well. As if the storming Airts weren't enough of a hazard, approaching too closely traps a ship in the dead star's gravity well -- but likely the crew has died of Radiation Poisoning long before that happens.

Localization

The Mouth of the Void is not believed to be the result of any unnatural or supernatural event; it is only a recently-created Black Hole that is still highly unstable and unpredictable in its behaviour.

A Lost Homeworld

The Mouth of the Void's creation collapsed all known Wormholes & Portals that connected the Core Worlds with the elven homeworld, Avalon. This event shattered the Avalonian Empire, and contributed to a long series of civil wars known as the Succession Wars. Whether Avalon even still exists, or was destroyed by the birth of the black hole, remains unknown.
