Master
The term Master applies to a teacher who is selected to represent a department at Taru International Academy. The title usually implies that the teacher excels at their subject and have contributed towards the ongoing develop of the subject in a significant way. Because of the esteem and privilege, Masters are chosen carefully, as they must represent their fellow colleagues during meetings with the Headmistress, Alice Monaghan , and have a large say over the curriculum that their department will teach. And, as Lo Chen puts it...
"Choosing a Master is a political nightmare." Lo Chen said before taking a swig of cold, hard rum. "At least with your department it was easy." Nekhii said. "You kidding me? I'm a Taruan with history. It must have upset some folks in Cantari. There's a lot of 'em here now, on school grounds with their own local heroes, somehow or another." "Shu Yang." Nekhii spluttered the name with disgust. "Yeah. Master and Deputy. We have a Fed Head, and a Cantari Second." Lo Chen finished his drink. "Welcome kids to Taru Academy."Exactly who has control over selecting the teacher as Master is often a topic of gossip among teachers, but as far as students are concerned, it is purely the decision of the Headmistress.
Master of Subject
Notable Masters of Subjects include Lo Chen, who is Master (and the only teacher!) of Seafaring. As well as teaching the students how to sail and maintain the junk boats ported at the nearby docks, as Master, Lo Chen is responsible for keeping students safe from any threats the sea might conjure.In the first year of the visual novel, students gossip of a ghost spotted lurking near the sea shore. It is Lo Chen who must investigate whether there is any truth to this.
Master of Administration
These Masters are leaders in administration matters at the school, making sure that student applications are received and responded to, that financial concerns are seen to and that public reputation of the school is healthy.Master of the School
These Masters are leaders in areas that involve building, decorating, maintaining and protecting the school. The most notable Master of the School is Nekhii, who is Master of Defence, which for some, is a very controversial matter.
