Escapists

Escapists are people found everywhere throughout the world, nicknames for people who have opted to live out their lives in seclusion rather than dealing with the horrific conditions. They accomplish this through various means, with people being referred to as different kinds of Escapists. The five most common types of Escapists are:
  • Cubists ~ Humans who reside themselves within the apartments located in the cities they live in; with all sorts of locks used on any entrance or exit. Oftentimes, they will order all essentials they need online and take part in online jobs; communicating through holographic displays if needed.
  • V-Human ~ Humans who have opted to escape the real world and have entered the virtual worlds. These humans will spend a majority of the day within these virtual worlds; working virtual jobs and gaining sustience on the few times they have to leave the VR simulations they reside in. Often proprieters of such worlds include Deepcore VR Division and PLAYZONE Realm Corporation.
  • Jailhounds ~ People who have resigned themselves to commiting crimes for the sake of having a shelter of some sort, oftentimes occuring for those who are homeless and have lost hope in getting one. They're often repeat offenders, landing themselves back in the slammer if it means that they have a roof over their heads and are fed.
  • Outlanders ~ People who live far away from civilization due to a lack of faith in government or other people; often constructing the homes themselves and making repeated requests for deliverers to bring them supplies whenever needed. For a more extreme case of Outlanders...
  • Isolationists ~ People who have opted to throw caution to the wind and completely live off the land on their own, working on farmland that they've obtained and making whatever they can themselves.

Enablers

There are several who will often enable others into becoming Escapists, with the most common organization creating them being the Deepcore Foundation. The Deepcore Foundation will sell hundreds of devices that make it easier for people to live within their own bubbles, such as creating automatic ordering machines; ports for food to be delivered to them; and in extreme cases: they will sell to willing buyers an Extended VR Tube, a device which humans can live in 24/7; sustaining them and keeping them clean for their entire life.

Support

Unfortunately, support and assistance for those who have become Escapists isn't common. While there are support groups for those who suffer from PTSD and various symptoms that tends to lead to humans becoming Escapists, most people have preferred the safety they feel they have obtained over anything else.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Generally, all Escapists have the same idea: hide away from the world and keep themselves safe from danger, no matter what. They will likely still have contact with those outside of their private sphere, but they will avoid physical contact as much as possible. Researchers on the human condition have speculated that the reasoning for people becoming Escapists stem from PTSD and trauma associated with the tragedies that occured after The Withering destroyed the Earth.

I can see how this would happen. The Cubists especially feel very real to me, because that's probably exactly what I would do in that situation. Heck, it's what a lot of us have been doing the past year and a half, right?   Nice take on this prompt!

Thank you! Also yeah, it certainly does feel like all of us have become Cubists. If VR were more advanced then it's a safe bet that a lot of people (me included!) would be V-Humans and just live in VR worlds.
