Merrian

Language of the Merfolk

A language that is used widely in the aquatic world of Isekai and is often called a less complicated version of Obsidic, a strong relationship is shown between these languages, and they are believed to have developed side by side in the depths of the sea. Speakers of this language are generally Merfolk or others that live in the ocean or near the coastlines, though coastal speakers are not as plentiful as those that speak Obsidic because Merfolk are often situated deeper within the ocean. The script for Merrian appears to have a strong relation to Obsidic, it is often accepted that Merrian was based on that language as a whole but the act of writing Merrian lacks the complicated gesture of forming a letter using all the fingers of your hand that is used in the Obsidic script.   The earliest appearance of this language is tied to the emergence of Merfolk as a race, it is generally accepted that Merfolk are a younger aquatic species when compared to Obsidea and much of their language seems to be a derivative of the older species. The Merrian script is easily transcribed on any surface and has a flowing quality that is similar to Elvish, many have noted the aesthetic qualities of the script and will use it for decorative purposes. The vocal component is also considered beautiful as well as simplistic, many have likened the words and phrases to the same type of sounds that rain or naturally running water or crashing make. Because of this quality, the language has a calming and soothing ability, even for those that cannot understand it and it has been used for songs and ballads of those that are stricken with terror or deep in sorrow. This language has a large presence throughout the ocean but there are fewer speakers on dry land, this seems to be attributed to the fact that Merfolk tend to reside far out in the deep water, still near enough to the surface to make use of the light but far from the shores and port towns where their language would flourish.   The advantages of speaking this language are rather diverse depending upon the occupation that you have, for instance, a bard would make great use of this language to calm and soothe and entertain those that may never have heard the vocal component of Merrian. At the same time, explorers and sailors that have a desire to trade or interact with the open water communities of the Merfolk race would find much easier acceptance and be able to make use of the language to calm certain aggressive sea creatures throughout their travels. The disadvantages are few because of the similarities that this language shares with Obsidic, though members of the Obsidea race may expect you to also be able to speak their own language if you exhibit the ability to speak Merrian and if you are unable to it has often been taken as an insult.

'The vocal component is also considered beautiful as well as simplistic, many have likened the words and phrases to the same type of sounds that rain or naturally running water or crashing make.'   Sounds like this would be beautiful to listen to. <3
