Shuttered windows wait for the smells of cinnamon and vanilla to be opened to the streets, drawing in those that wish for a warmth in their bellies and a joy in their hearts. Every day the gem-colored shutters of the district open as soon as the ovens are warm, the smells bringing in more interest than any advertising could. Claws and hands shape delicate balls of dough behind floured counters, roaring fires alight behind them, warming stones, proofing pastries, preparing for the hunger that draws people of all kinds.
Assumptions are made about the types of food that define cultures and people. It is always assumed that hearty races prefer hearty foods, meats and hard cheeses, simple creations that stand only to fill empty bellies. While that may be true for some, others delve into the intricacies of culinary arts, making works of art out of food that do not always match perceptions. The
Dragonkin are one such people, their culinary delights on display throughout the streets of the
Fearsome Maw. Sweet and savory, delicate and hearty, all sorts of food can be found in this bustling city.
Dragon buns are the crown jewel of the
Dragonkin‘s culinary arts. Shaped by hand into the visage of a sleeping
Dragon, these pastries are filled with cinnamon, nuts, fruit, and even honey depending on the day’s recipe. Each quarter of the
Fearsome Maw makes these delicate pastries differently, but each inspires a feeling of warmth and homeliness that brings customers back time and time again. Travelers have been known to come from across the world to have a taste of this local delicacy.
Origin of the Dragon Buns
Dragon buns have been a staple of the
Fearsome Maw for nearly as long as the
Dragonkin have been organized. No one is quite sure what district or color of
Dragonkin first created the recipe, but once the first buns were sold in shops, the phenomenon spread across the city with each color of
Dragonkin creating their own twist on the pastry. The original recipe was little more than a shaped cinnamon bun served warm with a drizzle of honey, but as each of the districts made their own, the recipe grew and changed, with different fillings and flavors becoming available depending on the location.
Shape & Flavor
Each district is known for a specific shape and flavor of Dragon bun based upon the color of the
Dragonkin in the district. Bakers in each district specialize in shaping buns that are reminiscent of
Dragons of their heritage while creating flavor profiles that are unique once again to their district and heritage.
Black Dragonkin make pastries that capture the fearsome figure of the
Black Dragon while including currants.
Pink Dragonkin prefer the sweeter flavor of strawberries and cream in their pastries.
No matter the district specialty, all bakeries also sell the original Dragon buns, although additional toppings are always offered. Even with the differences across the city, it is said that the original Dragon buns taste almost identical across the city, although some districts prefer theirs a little sweeter or baked a bit more.
