Draconic Language in Idyll | World Anvil

Draconic

-Hey, Zam, what language are these letters from? I haven't seen them before?
-Eh, it's Old Draconic, do you want me to teach you?
August and Zamarca
This is the language spoken by the Original Dragons when they landed on the planet of Idyll billions of years ago. There are no native speakers of the language anymore. However, ancients and those who study under the ancients will learn to speak, read and write a modern version of the language.

Writing system

Original Draconic used a logographic writing system, while the modern version uses a syllabary system in conjunction with the old symbols.

Modern vs. Original

The reason why there is a large difference between the modern and the original version is that it was dead for a couple of years after the last Original died.   The Ancient who inherited the hoard of the Original found millions of books written in the old language and constructed a newer version of it that would be easier to teach the younger dragons. As the language was hard to learn after The Deity and The Dragon had died.   There is no reason to speak the language, Dragons can do magic without it, and then there are the Translation Stones, but the few who learn the language does it for the cultural knowledge that it brings. It's the only thing that they have with them from the world where they actually came.   The reason why it is hard to learn is that the grammar works differently than all the other languages on Idyll and the dragons born on Idyll do not have the same mouth construction as the Original dragons so they can not make the exact same sounds. Remembering thousands of symbols is also hard, especially when learning a second language so the writing system has been made easier to use.
