Spellbinder: 5E Class

A human mutters a short incantation before letting loose a ball of fire at the pack of goblins rushing from their cavernous fortress. As the fireball erupts melting the goblins, the human’s two-handed greatsword flashes, absorbing the magical essence lingering from the spell. She steps forward, bringing the now empowered greatsword down upon the hobgoblin chieftain's head with a burst of force energy.   The nimble Rusco dashes across the hellish pits toward the hideous Bone Devil as battle wages around him. He concentrates, opening his hand wide, and in an instant, his spectral blue longsword appears as he drives the blade into the Bone Devil’s back. The Bone Devil roars, turning toward the Rusco, only to discover the attacker has rift stepped away to safety.   These magical warriors are Spellbinders, combatants that blend magic and martial prowess. Whether the Spellbinder follows the tradition of elementalist, rift walker, or sentinel, their knowledge of the arcane and battle discipline set them apart on the battlefield.

Of Might and Magic

A student of both the arcane arts and martial techniques, the Spellbinder seeks to empower their bonded weapon of choice before delivering a final blow. Those who master spellbinding learn to weave between casting spells and weapon attacks for maximum damage output. Others seek to build up enough arcane energy into their weapon before bursting down their enemies in a powerful onslaught.   When a Spellbinder bonds with a weapon, it is likened to an extension of their own body. As their bonded weapon is not only a tool in combat but also a source of magic, Spellbinder’s treat their bonded weapon with the utmost care. Choosing which weapon to bond with is an essential step in a Spellbinder’s life that is often predicated by prior weapon training and personal style.

Creating a Spellbinder

When you create your Spellbinder character, consider why you’ve chosen the complex path of mixing martial combat with the arcane art. Where were you trained? Were you a squire, wizard apprentice, or do you have a natural ability?   Furthermore, how does your Spellbinder choose to fight? With a massive greatsword, battle axe and shield, or maybe a Longbow that’s been passed down as a family heirloom. The joy of the Spellbinder is choosing a weapon means so much to your story.
